The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriation, Solomon Adeola (Yayi), has alleged that former President Muhammadu Buhari’s government borrowed over 400 billion dollars in order to stabilise the naira against the US currency. Adeola, who is representing Ogun West, also said the administration spent trillions of naira on fuel subsidy, saying the funds were held by less than one percent of Nigeria’s population.

 Following the gale of defections sweeping through the ranks and strongholds of the country’s leading opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party, the National Working Committee of the PDP has scheduled a meeting for Tuesday to address the wave of defections and other internal crises that have plagued the party over the past years.

 Police operatives in Taraba State have arrested nine suspected kidnappers and recovered an arsenal of weapons, including four AK-47 and three AK-49 rifles, along with 45 rounds of live ammunition. Police spokesperson ASP James Lashen disclosed in a statement that credible intelligence led to the successful operation.

 The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced that Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, will reopen for flight operations today. The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, had, on April 18, announced that due to a sudden and significant rupture in the asphalt surface at a critical section of the runway, the runway would be shut down for emergency repairs.

 The Nigeria Labour Congress has cancelled centralised May Day celebrations in Rivers and Edo states, citing the imposition of emergency rule in Rivers and alleged political interference in the affairs of its Edo State council. The national leadership of the NLC directed all affiliated industrial unions in Rivers State to organise and limit Workers’ Day celebrations to the state NLC secretariat.

 The Federal Government on Sunday issued a strong warning to Nigerians over the growing menace of cyber-slavery— a rising form of human trafficking increasingly targeting young people across the region. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, in a statement, expressed deep concern over the alarming number of Nigerian youths being lured abroad under false pretenses and forced into cybercrime operations under inhumane conditions.

 The Chief of Civil-Military Affairs (Army), Maj. Gen. Gold Chibuisi, has warned that civilians caught wearing military uniforms illegally risk arrest and prosecution, in line with Nigerian law. Speaking during a media chat with defence correspondents in Abuja, Chibuisi reiterated that while it is unlawful for non-military personnel to don military attire, the Nigerian Army does not condone violence against offenders.

 Operatives of the Delta State Police Command have killed five suspected kidnappers terrorising Ubulu-Uku, Issele-Uku, Issele-Asagba and environs areas of Delta State. The police public relations officer in the state Command, SP Bright Edafe, made this known in a statement on Sunday.

 The Presidency on Sunday said the recent defections of politicians from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress were of their free will and not coercion from President Bola Tinubu or his allies. It denied accusations of a one-party state, insisting that democracy is not under threat or undermined “simply because politicians exercise their rights of association.”
