The Bill Sponsored by Senator Ned Munir Nwoko, seeks to amend the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023, to require social media platforms like Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, TikTok, and Snapchat to maintain physical offices in Nigeria.
The bill also proposes new regulations for bloggers operating in Nigeria, mandating them to:
- Establish verifiable offices in any of the country's capital cities.
-Maintain proper employee records.
-Belong to a recognized national association of bloggers, headquartered in Abuja.
Senator Nwoko emphasized that these measures aim to promote accountability, transparency, and professionalism in Nigeria's digital media space, aligning bloggers with standards similar to traditional media houses. He also noted that the bill is not an attack on social media platforms but a demand for equity and respect for Nigeria's significant digital engagement.
The bill has been referred to the Senate Committee on Information Communication Technology (ICT) and Cyber Security for further deliberation and a public hearing, with a report expected within two months.

Haq haq haq end of bloggers.
ReplyDeleteGistlova over to you ooo
Why do you need a physical office as a blogger in Nigeria in 2025? There are better things to propose not this....If there are legal implications centering on data protection laws, these can be handled no matter the medium...
ReplyDeleteThis analogue mentality should be done away with...
DeleteAbroad here its a must for you to put an address for you to be sued in case you pst a story that you need to be sued for and if you do not put an address, another blogger or group of persons will sue you, note that they will still get your address but it will come with suing and u will pay for the lawyer that they use to charge you to court..
I guess they took the route of office being on ground cos of fake addresses in Nigeria...Abroad there are no fake addresses and because of your info on the data they will catch you more charges will be added.....it is a crime to blog anonymously, you must have a name, an address and a contact phone number.....you people in Naija are used nonsense oh, ,,, this is how it works all over.......I support this move cos fake news is too much and the blackmail is much...A faceless blog does blackmail stories and uses bitcoin to collect monies from the politicians, they have been paying and i guess its time to call it a day.
We learn every day . It is fair to seek accountability for their blogging.
DeleteGrand PA Ned should go and rest.

ReplyDeleteAren't there a zillion serious issues to discuss? These doorknob brained empty vessels. His proposal is due to his new born by his mistress and also how small madam's exit embarrassed him. Oga represent your ppl and not your home
ReplyDeletegetting rid of anonymous Journalism is good please....
DeleteThere is so much dangerously false "news" online, it needs addressing
DeleteMany people's loved ones have panicked about their parents death from false posts on social media all for money. Slander and libel is commonplace because there's no accountability. Politicians of all sides cannot help but feed children of anger with their regular diet of half-truths and blatant falsehoods to get into power at the expense of national security and cohesion. There's no altruistic blogger or online news anywhere anywhere. It's all a business and businesses have addresses.
The country is going through a tough period and there are better bills that could be passed to better the welfare of its people but look at what this fossil is proposing 😒!
ReplyDeleteKai! What kind of leaders are these? Total waste of space!
It's understandable that the bill is not the next thing we should be dealing with at the moment especially with the situation of the country but let's look at the bright side of it -Employment opportunities. One of our major problems.
DeleteAnd this will be the beginning of the end of free speech.
ReplyDeleteInteresting.
ReplyDeleteThey will give interesting arguments to justify this bill. But the ultimate aim is to end free speech in Nigeria. If you make the mistake of blogging about something that the Govt doesn't like, they will simply come to your office and pick you up. Nobody will be safe anymore.
ReplyDeleteSadly, this is Nigeria. The bill will most likely be passed into law. The only good thing is that it is going to be very difficult to implement.
Is this even possible?
ReplyDeleteAnything to silence the voice of masses is the only bill they pass in that assembly.
ReplyDeletePhysical office is your problem in 2025? Sorry sorry oo in Fela's voice.
ReplyDeleteThis will still not stop that blogger that jeanslover
ReplyDeleteSeriously, that physical office is not viable. They can be mandated to get registered to a body, that's fair enough.
Pa Ned, are your people not in need of important legislation?
He want see who to arrest for any negative news
ReplyDeleteBecause of his controversial lifestyle 😂
DeleteReally Interesting
ReplyDeleteIs not A Bad ideal o

ReplyDeleteAt least he took up this one, there will always be thousands of problems.
DeleteI think his news of allegedly having a baby with Chika Ike makes him do this . It is good though
ReplyDeleteNigerians want a near perfect society, but any little movement by the government in that direction, they shout it down with the pathetic excuse that there are more pressing issues to attend to ... as if Rome was built in a day.
ReplyDeleteThere is no day I will remember wikes response to this man years back after he called him a trouble maker and won't burst out laughing, wikes mouth is bad.
