Nigerian Govt Contemplates Shutting Down GAT In Abuja Airport Over illegal Activities

The Federal Government of Nigeria is contemplating shutting down the General Aviation Terminal (GAT) at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja because of alarming reports that the terminal's VIP section has become a hotspot for illegal activities, including money laundering, drug trafficking, and human trafficking.

The GAT, primarily used by private jet owners and charter services, has faced scrutiny due to regulatory weaknesses and the misuse of permits for non-commercial flights. These lapses have reportedly led to significant revenue losses for the government, estimated at over NGN 120 billion in the past decade.
A ministerial task force has recommended shutting down, reorganizing, and reopening the terminal to curb illegal activities and enhance aviation safety

  1. These are good reasons to shut it but can't they do a general overhaul of the management instead of just closing it. Much revenue can be made from this section if properly managed.
