  4. It's not an insult but it's an expression that tells that you are doing too much. Like you grew wings more than you should. Maybe you challenge him alot or you hardly take corrections or you don't take know for an answer or, you always feel superior to others or, you are too bossy or your I.T.K is too much or...

    1. Well said but it's mildly an insult because he will only call you that name when he is angry.

    2. It shouldnt be an insult to the woman. It is advisable for her to be willing to give-in sometimes so her husband won't feel bad about her strong willed attitudes. At least when they tell you things like that, as a wise person and someone who loves to make people she loves feel comfortable around you, she would sit back and have a rethink, flash back on the things she does unknowingly that makes people see her as oke nwanyi (strong willed woman) and cut down on those attitudes. For her husband to call her okenwanyi, I believe he is not even the only one that sees her as oke nwanyi.

  7. poster please ask your husband what he means... he could be insulting you or using the 'term' as a form of endearment.... you should also be able to tell in his tone if he means to insult you...
but please ooo do not bring your question here and because of the responses of blog visitors the small argument you and your hubby are having now becomes a big argument.... ask your hubby what he means when the two of you are not fighting and all is calm

  27. Oke Nwanyi is the same thing as Agu Nwanyi(this is basically someone saying you are a lioness), just means you are strong willed and don't take nonsense. My dad calls me Oke Nwanyi a lot. SDK no be by force to translate a language you dont understand.

    1. Stella was apt in her interpretation though. Im Igbo and the first thing i thought was that the husband was calling her a rat.
We are all just assuming that the intonation means strong woman. What if he was actually calling her a rat? Oke also means rat.

  28. First of all are you not an Igbo? Who hails you during quarrels? That’s a call for you to adjust your too much gragra, watch your stubbornness. He’s simply telling you in a mild way you’re always over doing it, you no dey gree. He’s not hailing you in this context.

For none Igbos, oke nwanyi can mean great woman, or stubborn woman depending on the occasion for instance a woman who just put to bed, launching an achievement in this context it’s a compliment but fight or quarrel it’s simply a subtle warning.

    ReplyDelete
  29. It means strong woman but in the context of a fight, it means a woman who is heady, stubborn, mouthy. I will advise you to tone down your attitude cos this is not a compliment and shows you are not a good wife.
