He d+ed peacefully at his residence in Lekki, Lagos, on the morning of Friday, February 14, 2025, his family confirmed in a statement.
“With a heart full of gratitude for a selfless life spent in the service of God, the nation, and humanity, we announce the passing of our beloved patriarch, Chief Samuel Ayodele Adebanjo. He died peacefully this morning at his home in Lekki, Lagos, at the age of 96,” the statement read.
A committed advocate for justice, democracy, and Yoruba self-determination, Adebanjo’s life was dedicated to the struggle for a fair and independent Nigeria.
Born on April 10, 1928, in Isanya Ogbo, Ogun State, Adebanjo started as a journalist before traveling to the United Kingdom to study law, later being called to the English Bar. His political journey began in 1943 as a Zikist (a follower of Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe), but by 1951, he joined the Action Group, becoming a close disciple of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo.
Throughout his life, Adebanjo remained a strong voice in Nigerian politics, championing progressive ideals and advocating for good governance. His last major political stance was backing Peter Obi of the Labour Party in the 2023 presidential election.
He is survived by his 94-year-old wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
The family is currently consulting with friends, associates, and interest groups across Nigeria to plan a befitting funeral, with details to be announced later. A condolence register has been opened at his Lagos residence (8, Ayo Adebanjo Close, Lekki Phase 1) and his country home in Isanya Ogbo, Ogun State.
