    Stories from my mother's hut.

    ONWUELO


    I was Ten going to Eleven when I began to differentiate my body parts, and knowing good from evil. Sex education was rarely mentioned in our home and we addressed body parts by other names.

    Dinner is usually taken at 7pm dot and we take it in turns to do the dishes.
    We were seated by the moonlight waiting for mum to tell us another story from her story collections. It was my turn to do the dishes and I didn't want to miss mum's tales. I asked her In my little voice if I could do the dishes later.

    I had the dishes done after much ado and straight to the mat where we usually sit for her to tell her stories , which was ofcourse handed down to her by her own mother. This particular story she said was about ONWUELO the pretty girl , her beauty was compared to that of a gazelle.


    Onwuelo had lots of suitors coming for her hand in marriage. She was very selective and choosy. She categorized some suitors as short , some low background , others not handsome enough. Till she got a particular suitor who was from another kingdom.
    I listened with rapt attention as mum told us and I couldn't wait to the part where we had to sing along :

    Onwuelo na'aba.
    Saala
    Anyi bi nobu
    Saala
    Obutolo nmili
    Onwuelo na'ba
    Saala
    Imana asa Wu asa mpete
    Imana obu azu kobu
    Onwuelo na'ba


    The story ended on a sad note where Onwuelo had to jump into the sea to follow her suitor to the beyond.

    When mum finished the tale, I couldn't help but observe that there is an Onwuelo in every girl. I wondered perhaps if Aunty E was just like Onwuelo who was pretty, choosy and got stuck in between. I also didn't understand at my age why some ladies had to tow the part of Onwuelo, a part of self destruction.

    I tilted my shoulder as i picked up the mpanaka lamp just by the door. I shaked it and the kerosene in it jiggled like Sherlock coins. I snuffed out the lamp and headed for bed.

    The hand of the Lord was upon me_ Ezekiel 37:1

    This is a figure of speech used in the school of prophets. It describes a burden in the spirit. When the hand of the Lord comes over you, it puts a certain weight on your spirit and you can feel it. To the natural man, it is a feeling of depression. Your natural mind interprets the weight as sadness, discomfort, sorrow, restlessness or depression.

    How do I differentiate my natural depression from the burden of the Lord? Usually, I can say what is causing my depression. For instance, my lover broke up with me, my mother is sick, I have no money and the landlord is chasing me. These situations can cause me depression. The burden of the Lord however cannot be traced to anything in particular. You are sad but you don't know why. That's the hand of God. All of a sudden you don't want to have any human company, that's the burden of the Lord.

    There are moments you think you are depressed because of how bad the economy is. But you are not the minister of finance or economic development. So that situation is the dry bones and your anger and depression is a burden from God. It means if you follow the leading of the spirit you are about to start a spiritual process that can have significant consequences. It is the burden of the Lord that will make a church member worry about the state of the church, or maybe the welfare of a person in the church, or the absence of a particular department. Never ignore these burdens. Ask God to speak clearly about it.

    _Brought me out_

    Out of where? Out of your physical understanding , out of your physical location, out of your personal problems and concerns. If the spirit doesn't lead you out of your own place, He can't lead you into the place where the change ought to take place.

    When the game is over in the physical location, you can't continue to play there. You then have to ascend to a higher realm. When you are dealing with death, you must leave the realms of time. For death is a function of time. In eternity, nothing and no one is dead. If you want to reset and restart a game, you must get into the space of eternity. If you want to recover the years that was lost, you must go into the storehouse of days in eternity.

    Have you lost anything in 2024…? Did you lose your job, your peace, your faith, your property, a life of someone you cherish? Is it game over?

    Here are the first two principles...
    1. Get the hand of the Lord. Get the burden. If you don't have it, you cannot do anything about the situation. The Bible describes the burden as "COMPASSION" in the case of Jesus. Without him feeling that compassion he could not perform any miracle.

    2. The spirit of God must lead you out of the present situation and take you to a new realm

    No matter the situation you are faced with, pls do not give up for God has sent me to tell you it's *GAME ON!*

    If you've ever done any work at anytime where you have to put together 500 or 1000 and somedays more as profits and at the end of the month your small small profits when summed up together doesn't look so bad, you'll learn to appreciate the 1000 or 500 naira gifted to you by anyone.

    Appreciate the “brakes” in your life. Use them wisely!

      Light is not bad in Agbowo, my brother went to UI and stayed in Agbowo, and that's where I always stay anytime I'm in Ibadan, in fact I'm at Agbowo at present, at least they have fourteen hours light in a day, sometimes more than that, unless the light is faulty.
