Lagos State House Of Assembly Produces 1st Woman Speaker After Obasa's Impeachment

Lasbat Meranda has been sworn in as the new Speaker of the Lagos state house of aasembly after the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa by the Lagos House of Assembly amidst corruption allegations.

She will be the first woman to serve in that role, after seven men previously held the position between October 2, 1979, when Oladosu Oshinowo became the first Speaker, and today, when Mr Obasa was impeached.

Mrs Meranda was first elected member of the Lagos House of Assembly from Apapa 1 in 2015 when Mr Obasa was first elected Speaker. She is currently serving her third term as a lawmaker.

Before joining the Lagos parliament, she worked as a political aide in Apapa Local Government Area between 2008 and 2014.

She had previously worked in the private sector, including running an oil and gas company.

She was born on August 16, 1980, in Lagos. She attended Randle Primary School and Anglican Girls Grammar School and took undergraduate and graduate studies at Lagos State University and the University of Lagos, respectively.

Her legislative records remained unclear, but parliamentary sources said she was a loyal member of the ruling All Progressives Congress and always toed the party line.

  9. The former speaker looted allegedly has so many houses in Lagos with a multimillion dollar home in Buckhead Georgia near Atlanta where he pays annual property tax of about $40,000 a year! His property tax alone over 5 years is enough to house many residents of Makoko. Atlanta Exburbs is the money laundering capital of Nigerian politicians. I wish a revolutionary leader will arise & sell off the looted houses and use the money to give subsidized education to the youths. If a speaker stole so much & got swollen headed one wonders how much looting is going on in the 36 states and AsoπŸ€”
