DeleteIf he holds a US passport & he is being unlawfully detained due to the “big man syndrome” or “don’t you know who I am malaise” in 🇳🇬 where the rich use the old colonial instruments of oppression recklessly, his family should contact the state Dept & file a false imprisonment or hire an attorney for $100/hour to file it for them here. There is freedom of speech in the constitution of the US & it’s actually not the same as the 🇳🇬one where Defamation is loosely defined & law enforcement is judge, jury & prosecutor. He has a 1st Amendment right to free speech (unless he shouted “fire” in a movie theater) leading to a stampede & injury. Detention without trial can also violate the 4th Amendment & the Due Process Clause of the 14th Amendment: unless it serves the interest of the US government to do so. The issue with many of these cases online is that a lot of people are emotional about legal topics. Like the stampede in Ibadan case is like shouting “fire in a movie theater” because the organizers should reasonably be aware that Ibadan is the top 3 largest cities in 🇳🇬; promoting that “parents should troop in with their kids” with a 5000 capacity venue is reckless.
ReplyDeleteI watched the promotion video for the sad event in horror! Do the organizers not know that a few compounds in Beere, Mapo, Oje, even a few streets in Bashorun can easily have 5000 folks to fill THAT high school compound? Those who grew up in UI, Bodija, Ashi, even up to the 80s can easily attest to the population & povery & such advert is reckless endangerment of attendees since they did not hire Adamasingba or Liberty stadia with space and many exits for safety. Nothing against them especially the radio station owner who can be argued was only doing his job except that he got more involved. The calls to not prosecute seem to be an affirmation of the attitude of the ruling elites in 🇳🇬 that their lives are more important than others. Instead of her family & friends getting emotional or casting aspersions, they should set up a go fund me for her legal defense. The promoters WERE reckless in promoting the event. Yes the parents should also face prosecution but the burden is on the legal defense team of the organizers to prove that they reasonably did not know the demographics including household income & no of people per household of Ibadan prior to going on radio to advertise the event in a manner that caused the stampede. If they pull you over to cite you here, don’t beg government officials here. State facts. Politely. Begging makes it seem you are entitled or want to be let off without due process. The “whataboutism” is justified let the other cases be prosecuted. They are all entitled to a fair & speedy trial in a court of law. In the US that we try to copy with these events/NGOs the burden of proof is on you to convince a jury of your peers that you were well intentioned as a philantropist using your history of safely hosting previous events & that you were uneducated about the mass poverty, Almajiri-like population created by decades of terrible mis-governance in a huge ~15m city, Ibadan. If there is evidence of persecution for ANOTHER reason by any individual, make it public/ go to a court. Makinde is a disappointment to many. I am hoping a performing governor arises in ANY state in 🇳🇬 to prove that a federation works. Imagine the US with only one city like NY! It won’t be the US. Chicago, Houston, Philly, Pittsburgh, Austin, Seattle, San Francisco, LA, Austin, Dallas, New Orleans, Asheville, Baltimore etc. are big. Your governors & counties are more culpable than the presidency. Most of the best cities in the US are blue states, not impacted as much by whether the GOP is in power as much as 🇳🇬. They are federating units with different laws except on federally legislated issues. Yes BAT is inept, but hold these looters at states & local levels accountable. Biden or Trump are not responsible for many things in my community, my local mayor is, from some roads to water supply to fire fighting.✌🏾

No. Ignorance is no excuse & exposure plus schooling gives a more rounded educational experience which in turn affects other areas of your life including philanthropy. It’s not about buying a “Dr” title, the fad among many ignorant folks in 🇳🇬 now! Adeola Fayehun a YouTuber fed thousands in Maiduguri after the flooding. This anonymous writer has fed thousands BUT there was & will be no publicity in future. I know folks here who pay salaries of high school principals & teachers in their town in Nigeria whenever the government owes them for months. Silently. From their personal income. They are anonymous on SM. It is next level humiliation of the poor to be publicizing that I’m giving them a bag of rice that can barely feed them for a month. Just because they are less privileged does not mean they don’t deserve their privacy!

The organizers would have been justified if they did not promote a 5000 capacity event to a city with 15m occupants & did not promote it on Radio to reach millions! If they had rented Adamasingba or Liberty it would be unjust to hold them accountable. The venue was small, with few exits, no first responders to administer CPR. Many lives may have been saved if there were. First response & attention to details matter. It’s all about accepting responsibility. It is good for society when everyone learns to accept responsibility. Running an NGO is serious! Think Obama, Clinton, Rockefeller foundation. It’s serious stuff with simulated scenarios of crowd control as part of the preparation. Even my 3000 member church does it & many churches do it in 🇳🇬. As for the 🇳🇬🇺🇸 in detention, his mom should get an 🇺🇸attorney & the musician will stop being thin skinned so as not to be “cancelled” by US promoters if it gets out that he used his access to power to unlawfully detain someone who said “something bad, even wrong” about him. There are YouTube videos of”Michelle Obama is a man” plus US presidents being heckled by protesters to their face? It comes with being a public figure. Many have been falsely linked to the baby oil guy online. How many did you hear they oppressed & got arrested. Many want 🇳🇬 to work but will NOT like it if it actually works. They won’t be able to use tax payer funded police as personal guards, loot the treasury with inflated contracts, have themselves on welfare with goverment bought cars & housing while those in need suffer, won’t turn a poorly paid staff to a a 24-hr on call maid, security man etc My cleaning lady took $320 for a 6-hour “deep cleaning” in December. It was $200 but she said it was a “deep cleaning session”. She does many houses per month.Do the math. How many 🇳🇬s with 2 poorly paid full time helps (or the newly abused word, “chef”on call 14 hours with verbal, emotional or physical abuse) make that in a month not to talk of hours! The day Nigeria works, many self employed people will make living wages, be able to afford what they japa for as minimum wage carers abroad. Hold all elected officials & PRIVATE employers accountable. Live-in Nannies now make about $3000/month. The video of David’s dad driving to pick his daughter-in law from hospital says it all? Personal chauffeur is Oprah level expensive in the US, stop exploiting the less privileged.✌🏾
