The Nigerian government has explained that it is yet to take action on 60 private jets that operate in the country without payment of import duties amounting to several billions due to various court cases.
The Nigeria Customs Service spokesperson, Abdullahi Maiwada, disclosed this on Tuesday while filing questions on the verification exercise for private jet owners.
Recall that in October, NCS had announced an extension of the exercise by a month to November 14, 2024.
However, despite the expiration of the deadline, NCS is yet to take action against the private jet owners.

Reacting to the development on why NCS has not grounded the private jets, Maiwada blamed several court cases.
“There are issues that border on some court processes, and any disclosure will very much interfere with the processes, and that is why we cannot update the public about it.
“So we don’t want to interfere with the investigations and outcome of the process,” he said.
In June 2024, the NCS summoned nearly 80 privately owned aircrafts in Nigeria to present their import documents or face grounding.
In November 2022, reports emerged that owners of foreign-registered private jets, comprising top business moguls, leading commercial banks, and other rich Nigerians, dragged the federal government to court seeking to prevent the government from grounding their planes for allegedly refusing to pay import duty on the jets.

  3. It’s good as they increased OTC withdrawals. There’s been such cash shortage I keep wondering why? Many of us now rely on POS merchants who I’ll rather avoid to be honest. The charges are ridiculous when I can easily just use the ATM and be okay. By the way, will they start loading the ATMs more? It’s been so hard to get cash (in Lagos at least). Jeez 🤦‍♀️

Seems the Apostle that was killed went to Kogi state for a purpose but ministered and lived in Lagos? The news is a bit confusing in mentioning those addresses. I pray his family find strength and peace at this time 🙏

Emefiele, others own the confiscated 753 duplexes “and other apartments” in Abuja? How for goodness sakes? How do a set of people have access to such large sums of money? Are these rules and measures to cash access restricted to only some of us? Is the CBN and other monetary agencies a joke? How are there always these loopholes in our system? When will looters in Nigeria get long jail terms (that they’ll serve in real jails, by the way) and even more harsh sentences?
This is not okay at all in a country with law and government!!!
Okay, what’ll happen to the confiscated buildings?

Some news will just make you think and think 🤦‍♀️

I do so pray the tax reform bill passes through. Just the antagonism it’s experiencing by some governors and especially house members tells me it’s for the greater good. If it wasn’t serving some peoples’ states’ selfish interests, they wouldn’t care so much. It’s about time the presidency thinks of measures that works for the greater good of Nigeria and not serve the interests of one region or group of people.

Might I aLeo add that I like how much there’s information about some of these moves. Everybody might not understand but many will and that’s a whole lot of difference for a government that is trying to do the right thing. They should keep it up.
They should also think of policies and measures that’ll bring down the high cost of food. It’s become so hard for us to be kind to each other just because of how expensive basic food items are.
