Burkina Faso, Mali, And Niger Set To Permanently Exit ECOWAS In 2025

Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger Republic will stop being members of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, from 2025.

President of ECOWAS commission, Alieu Touray, made the announcement on Sunday during the 66th ordinary session of heads of states and governments in Abuja.
The military regimes in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger announced their immediate withdrawal from the ECOWAS in January this year.
Prior to the withdrawal, the trio were suspended from ECOWAS, with Niger and Mali facing heavy sanctions.
However, Touray said ECOWAS has now set the countries’ exit at January 29, 2025 – July 29, 2025.

The ECOWAS president said the timeframe would allow for last mediations and any diplomatic interventions.

The development comes after the military-led governments of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso announced their decision to withdraw from the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, describing the move as “irreversible.”

The three countries, in a joint statement, accused ECOWAS of serving the interests of France, their former colonial power and pledged to chart a new path for their citizens.

  2. We cannot encourage the re-emergence of military rule in West Africa, the military usually arrive like saviours but turn out to be more corrupt than the civilians.
The 3 nations are being ruled by military juntas and all the grandstanding is just to protect the personal interest of the military rulers

    1. @08:14 Golden Tulip, ECOWAS is NOT A CONTINENT but an economic integration among countries in West Africa to promote trade, peace and security. WEST AFRICA is just a subregion in the CONTINENT OF AFRICA.

Please, a little research would help you make an informed comment.

  8. If those are their reasons, especially the last line. Then their points are valid.

If their interests are not served, they have a right to withdraw.

I hope they think this through also and not make hasty decisions.

I wish them well in their new Ecowas or their own new community of whatever name they choose to.

  10. Hmmmmm. Feels like French speaking nations in west Africa want their own coalition. Perhaps their needs and goals are different and better aligned if they work together on their own. Weren’t these also the countries working heavily with Rusha? Perhaps things go deeper than they appear. I wish them well and that the nations reap prosperity.
