  1. Firstly, I will advise that you find a gathering of Nigerians (helped me a lot when I moved to Portugal). Yes, there are Nigerians you should avoid when abroad to avoid getting into trouble but that’s the same way there are also lots of Nigerians that you can associate with. This will help you kill part of the boredom and loneliness a lot of people experience when they first move abroad.

I found my ‘gang’ by joining a Nigerian church in Portugal (still feel a void in my heart after leaving that church.

If you have the opportunity to make friends, including foreigners, do not hesitate to do so. A lot of people fall into depression because they are just too lonely in a new country.

Going to a Nigerian church also helps you interact with people that eat what u eat and speak what you speak.

Lastly, leave well within ur means. Don’t also be desperate to get rich quick and have a lot of savings just yet, there will be a lot of time for you to do that.

If your family members start disturbing you for money immediately, do not pretend to be fine with them, let them know it takes a while for people to settle in enough to have something to send back home. If u can’t afford to do that yet, don’t! Don’t go broke trying to please the people back home.

  4. There’s no trick or tips to it. Just pray you get in contact with people that want you to prosper and can give you accurate information that will make life easier for you if not you’ll just be stagnant.

  6. I told my husband that when we japa, it’s the government of that country that will roll out red carpet for us and beg us to stay. Yes it happened and the most outstanding experience for me in New Zealand is the people. If I write about the quality of life and people here, you’d think I am exaggerating. I have never experienced any form of racism here and the Nigerian community here are so cozy and united.

The only aspect I hope an improvement on is my career. I got here and had more kids (twins in my 40s) and I didn’t have a live in nanny or house help as I was used to back in Nigeria . We have daily child care services and a babysitter who comes in when hubby and I need a few hours to hangout, then a cleaning service that comes in twice a week on hourly rate. Sometimes I enjoy the organic mummy-wife lifestyle but, to be honest, I miss my banking career I had back home.

  7. Canada can be lonely but the best is to live within your means. Any PR can come and after a few months buy a house, buy new cars BUT... how much would be your monthly payments after? No do pass yourself. Mix with like minds and dont create unnecessary competition for yourself. I personally hope I get a sure link into IT.
