Saturday In House Gists - Being Homeless Due To Rent Increment Or Sale Of House

Should the headline have been wicked Landlords/Landladies?
Landlords and landladies these days are so wicked it is unbleievable....

They have no empathy at all and will just wake up and announce rent increment or sale of house...Their wicked act has left a lot of people homeless and out on the streets or begging for money to rent other places...
Was your rent increased recently? Or did you find yourself and your properties outside because the landlord threw you out? what happened?
I dont even want to includ what Lawyers and house angents do to people all in the name of agreement and caution....Sometimes the monies these two sets of people collect is even more than the rent...Sometimes its the landlord acting as both...lol
Lets gist!!

  1. My present situation right now,
We pay 300k for a two bed,,they sold our compound, and the new landlady increased it to 600k,I now decided to move to one bed, they are saying it's 500k,am yet to find 450,my rent is expiring at the end of this month.lm thinking of retaining the place, cos if I pay 500k,at the end of the day, I'll pay more than7 to 800k, it's really bad in pH.

  2. Our house was sold in June, the new landlord increase the rent to 100%. Even agency will be paid. We went as tenant to complain that it's too much,we were given quit notice to quit in September

We have contacted lawyer to help us get 6 months a least. The New landlord said we are not her tenant that she can't give us that time. That we should quit highest this month

It's well. We are only left at the mercy of God and our lawyer

    1. Even if your lawyer is able to get you 6 months are you aware that you will still pay for the six months because it's not free accommodation.

  4. It is so sad that in Nigeria where people don't pay mortgage on their houses choose to increase house rent arbitrarily that's wickedness.

  5. I remember when we were still in Portharcourt. My mum rented a shop in a remote area around etche region. There was no single provision store when we started.. We were making sales like, in fact, sometimes people queue to buy from us. We sell everything, provisions, soup items, frozen foods, eggs, drinks, recharge cards, fuel , snacks etc.
When it was time to renew the rent, Landlord increased it by 100%... My mum agreed to pay after begging and negotiation... Only for the landlord to state that his wife wanted to use the shop and that we should move out.
We left there to another place, and the woman did not stay in the shop for 3 month.

This is where the Chinese are good
They will sell something to you for 10 cents. They will see you selling it for $3 and they will big try to collect that business. This landlady saw you peoples business and figured she can be making that money instead of sticking to her rental

  7. I experienced this 6 years ago and it was a hunted house oh, we all left the upstairs and to the glory of God things turned out well. Our present compound needs a facelift that I can't even bring some of my friends home because of shame. We can't move out either because it's a peaceful house and the landlord doesn't increase the rent anyhow but he is very very old that I fear when he departs his children may be mean to the tenants.

  8. Sudden increase on rent nowaday is so alarming and frustrating 😞

  9. Please Stella don’t make it seem like all landlords are bad , even when you don’t increase rent some tenants will and have refused to pay rent. How can you live in another person’s house and refuse to pay rent? A lot of landlords built these houses under sweat and tears to help feed and pay school fees. Some tenants will owe you , wait for you to go to court and then move out quickly without paying what they owe you. The economic situation is on everyone, how long do you expect the Landlord to give Grace? A lot of Tenants are heartless!! I as a tenant can never owe rent, that is the first thing ( shelter) then food,at times I don’t have food but I always have a place to lay my head. You have the whole year to get your rent together.

    1. The courts need to step in
That’s why people are selling off and the landlords are getting more hardened

    2. Exactly what I wanted to say. At least most Nigerians even know who their landlord is to beg them and many enjoy extended grace periods. You see abroad eh, nothing like landlord for most apartments. If you don't pay after due date, late fees start to add up, once grace period is over, they call the cops. You'll be kicked out, your debt sent to collections agency, your credit destroyed. Your landlord na banks and corporations. The people you see managing the apartments are employees and can't help you. Except for states that now have policies prohibiting kicking out tenants. Basic rent is going for $2500/room right now in my state. May God help us all 🙏🏾

    3. Cops do not kick tenants out. They take you to court and the courts kick you out. Not the cops.

  10. Oh wow.
I thought I was alone in this new landlord and house rent increase issues.
Worst is that looking for new house is not easy at all, plus the money and the increased rate are almost same (in same area because of work proximity) and you have to include agents fee, agreement and so on which person no get.
    God will help his children.

  11. Personally, I believe investing in realestate in Nigeria is not wise. Where do I even start? Tenants will give you story, house value you thought is appreciating is only over run by inflation. You will end up being called wicked and insensitive if you try to make tenants pay and hold up their end of the contract.

  12. I have dis house issue on my mind b4 I sleep thiz afternon, let me pour my mind here, in my own case the govt came in Sept n paste one paper on d house Dat iz distress structure n the houz is nt strong n so many faults on d building. Oct last month dey bring another paper n paste that they give us warning to vacate the house because of risks to tenants. we cal landlord snap d 2 papers n send to him, he come to d house 2 see it, he went 2 council to talk to dem but they didn't gree. Some tenants have leave alrdy, some of us r still remaining in d compound, no money to rent another house becoz of d high prices landlord n agents r calling. The council people came last week tocheck the house again, dey snap picture n do video of d house. The landlord on his own call people 2 open all chambers down, all d compound now is smelling of poo becos of d chambers Dat is opened. They also break open all d pipes carrying poo n water for Barlthing open, everything is smelling, it's just to hope n belive on God nw

  13. I will be forever be grateful to our former landlord. Till we moved out of that place the rent increased only twice and it was not much. God continue to rest Baba soul. Such a kind man.

House hunting now is not for the faint hearted o. Even remote areas are collecting be huge amount of money.

  14. In my area, there are more wicked tenants than landlords. Living rent free and doing case with the landlords, instead of paying rent. 🙄🙄🙄

  15. Na so we see am here ooo, when landlord was alive, we were paying 80k for the selfcon. Though is old house , but when I moved in i did a lot of repairs, roof, doors, toilet and I shared the bill with our landlord.
Now landlord is dead, after two months, landlady said all selfcon is double of the previous amount.
Meaning 160k, how do you increase rent in this economy like that, no empathy at all. WE begged and begged, all she said is, if you don't like it pack and go. That she knows how much people pay in Port Harcourt.
Now you are comparing Port Harcourt with this part of rivers, forgetting this is village and old house for that matter.

    Story long abeg😔

    WE MOVE!!

  16. Anonymous 15:23, u are very correct, when we building our house some yrs back, the bricklayer helped us to construct 2 self con, when I saw it I said I don't want tenancy wahala, we decided that we will use for visitors but when armed robbers before he paid people said we shld rent it out, since then, it's one problem after the other, they will only pay for the first year, u see the subsequent one, Na wahala, one of them said he was deported, beginning my hubby to pls collect six months, out of pity he did, he didn't pay , it was after 1yr we asked him to pack out.
Till now nobody occupy it, my hubby said, it's better that way. In our environment, self con, is Around 250 but my hubby collects 200k yet they will not pay. At times it's the tenant that causes trouble.

  24. I always advice prospective landlords not to invest in residential properties, if you do just know that you are running an NGO because tenants will owe you better invest in commercial properties like shops it is easier to manage. For my 25 years in property management I can never invest in residential. When it's time to renew their rent the kind of excuses you will be hearing eeh even you will be weak because they will make you look very insensitive like you don't have empathy, meanwhile some of them will get the money instead of paying they will reinvest it when the deal knock then their eyes go clear.

  25. Irony of life, some landlords are very kind but the tenants are wicked and insensitive.
But some tenants are good and the landlord is very wicked. So it both ways.
Our present landlord is over 80, very considerate and kind. For over ten years he did not increase rent. When he finally did he asked for our opinion. Despite this 2 out of 4 tenants are always owing baba.
My family is praying and working towards having our own property because baba is old, if anything happens today we never can tell what his children will do.

  26. Some tenants are terrible also the landlord too. If you know you not got the rent complete speak to the landlord before hand. I do that and my landlord understands me. I give him his respect and I respect myself too.My last landlord was crazy with surrounding looking dirty. It was a large family they use firewood, there wasn't water and he didn't care since the children will go fetch water. He sold charcoal, reared goats , chicken and the compound started to irritate me. I moved to my present place even though it is a bit expensive but I got peace of mind but now my neighbor be my issue now she nur dey mind her business kinda old mama in her 50s. Me wey like my quietness she go bring food, greet tired ooo. I will just answer and go straight to my house. My wife is worst that one she no want problem she dey on her own, dis mama nur gree. We call her mama Mai Angwar. She nur dey stay one place and she like cho cho too. Imagine she seeing me and asking how was my night in the present of my wife.
