Gospel Singer Sinachi Sued N5billion Over Alleged Copyright Infringement Of Hit Song 'Way Maker'

Nigerian gospel singer Sinach, known globally for her hit song Way Maker, is facing a ₦5 billion lawsuit filed by music producer Michael Oluwole (professionally known as Maye).

The lawsuit, filed at the Federal High Court in Lagos, centers around alleged copyright infringement. Maye claims he contributed to the song's production, including recording, mixing, mastering, and creating instrumental accompaniments, without a formal agreement transferring his rights. He asserts that Sinach has benefited from licenses and royalties without compensating him

Sinach, through her legal team, disputes these allegations, maintaining that she is the sole author of the song and that Maye's role was limited to mixing the master recording—a service for which she says he was compensated. Sinach also highlights her preexisting international acclaim and denies that Maye holds any co-ownership rights to the song

The case, which began on November 27, 2024, has been adjourned until January 2025 to allow for further evidence presentation
