Last week, I was a panelist for a talk show about dating and marriage. Twas a fun time, full of sharing and learning.
ReplyDeleteLet me drop some of the questions and paraphrase the answers I gave. Hopefully, it helps someone here.
QUESTION: Should I marry a man who isn't working or earning anything at all?
ANSWER: A man should have something doing, before he considers getting married. No matter how little the pay is. Just make sure there's something coming in, either daily, weekly or monthly. Or how else do you intend to fend for your family - begging or depending on others?
Marriage is beyond "I have potential". "Believe in me". Or "Trust the process". The man needs to prove that he has capacity to work, earn and be responsible.
QUESTION: My fiance insists after the marriage, we will live with his parents. I have my doubts about this. Should I accept?
ANSWER: "For this reason shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife. And the 2 shall become 1".
A man should be independent before starting his own family, and that involves having his own place, no matter how 'lowly' it is. Besides, having your wife in your parents house, will be very uncomfortable for her. Too much interference that will not augur well for all parties in the end.
QUESTION: My fiancee knows how much I earn, and insists I must give her a certain HUGE amount every month end, to prove I can take care of her, else she won't go ahead with our marriage plans.
ANSWER: My brother, run ooo!! That is a GIANT RED FLAG!! She's not yet your wife. She's not your responsibility. You can give her cash and gifts. There's no love without giving and sharing. However, for her to specify how much to give her and when to give her, is an absolute NO. And she dey even threaten you join. So what happens after the wedding, and you go broke? Naah!! As long as you ain't stingy, a grateful woman will always appreciate whatever you do for her, before or after marriage.
