The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has raised concerns about the financial strain on Nigerian universities due to high electricity bills..... ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, who spoke on Thursday during the opening session of a two-day national conference convened by the union in Abuja, said some universities face monthly electricity bills ranging from N200 million to N300 million.
This is a huge burden, considering that the federal government allegedly provides only N15 million monthly for running costs.
Prof. Osodeke highlighted the disparity in funding, pointing out that while universities struggle with these high costs, individual senators receive N21 million monthly.
This situation has triggered fears that many universities may soon shut down due to the unsustainable financial pressure.
*sigh*
ReplyDeleteUniversities, hospitals, police stations, civil service organisations should have concessions as they are government owned. Even large private organisations who employ people that pay tax, should have concessions.
ReplyDeleteThey know the right thing to do but won't....We have a dearth of creative thinkers...It's about cruise, stealing public funds...Very sad

Hello iya Boys
I don't even know what they want from the masses.
ReplyDeleteThey keep messing us up left and right, pushing and pushing and pushing.Band aids being removed drastically and telling us to deal with it.Meanwhile nothing in place to cushion the effect, that power minister needs to be removed.
The new tariff is really outrageous. The minister said,he went round other African countries and Nigeria is the lowest. 🤔🤔🤔
ReplyDeleteWhen students dey boil beans with electric cooker? You thinks say na beans?
ReplyDeleteIn the hostel? It's mot allowed nii
DeleteAnd the gas they would have used as an alternative is still affordable to them? 🤡
DeleteBut most of the sectors has been privatised, I don't know why it is not effective and also very expensive? It is like they just making money off of people without delivering quality.
ReplyDeleteNigeria is a joke
ReplyDeleteBlack people cannot manage their countries. African countries should be sold to white people
ReplyDeleteRight now I live a BQ in a university and the school has decided to ration the power, they turn in on for 3 hours in the morning and 7 hours at night for residents and then 7 hours for offices during the day to cut down on the bills because they can't afford to pay so much for bills.
ReplyDeletethis is one is serious.
ReplyDeleteThis country can be really exhausting.
ReplyDeleteThis is a university where research is constantly ongoing. Harness other means of electricity generation and be self sufficient.
ReplyDeleteExactly! Universities are places where the brightest minds on the planet usually are, and these ppl cannot figure out sources of alternate energy? It’s not 1724 when knowledge was limited. Can they not petition the government for subsidies to build up their solar energy, wind or water? Can they not put their engineering and physics departments to use, run competitions at the undergrad and grad levels to get the students thinking and generate ideas.
DeletePaying students should not have to be caught up in this mess. The administration is to work on these things behind the scenes and not let it get to the point where students get affected. They could even build up their energy to a level that they even sell electricity to the government and make an income for the school if they were savvy about things.
It's easier to complain apparently
DeleteI think there should be an alternative, source for funds get Ur solar energy. This will ease the burden of exorbitant payments
