Author Chimamanda Adichie Talks About Feminism And How Some People See It

She talks about the after effects of identifying as a feminist......Read and discuss

She Said;"Chimamanda wants to destroy marriages. If you make a choice to publicly identify as feminist, you have to be prepared for hostility. Of course, there are men who think that they're going to lose out in some way. If you've been thrust in a position of privileged that you haven't really earned, you don't want to lose it. And so there's a sense in which I understand why they feel that way.
When I said I was a feminist, somebody would say to me, oh feminist are just women who cannot find husbands. They're just angry women.
There's older people who've said to me my daughters love you and I'm very worried about that. Sometimes my daughters argue with us and then they start by saying, Chimamanda says, and then they're tell me we're worried because we worry that they will never get married. And even them saying that, for me, I think it's so sad that still, with ostensibly progressive parents, there's a sense in which girls are still not given full value until somehow marriage has validated it. It's still such a sad thing."

  1. Let's get this right. What's feminism?

In a nutshell, it's equal right socially, economically, politically etc.

Are we truly ready for this conversation?

The Nigerian women are hypocritical in nature with the exception of few. Chimamanda could passed for a feminist no doubt but how many Nigerian women are willing to share equal responsibilities? They want equal rights when it soothes them but shy away from responsibilities.

Nigerian women, you guys play way too much in this country I swear, and the jokes are so overwhelming on you ladies. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Let me allow my respected brother and Boss man Dante to speak further on this.

    1. Please incorporate the use of the word "some" in your writings. You wrote that Nigerian women are hypocritical and made an exception for Chimamanda. That's contradictory to the point you're trying to prove.

You made some salient points, though. Some women believes being extremely domineering is what define them as feminist. Some are selective feminist, feminist only when they will not be accountable. Quite hypocritical, I must say.

  4. People need to understand what feminism mean. It's so obvious being educated is totally different from literacy.

  7. That's almost every Nigerian definition of feminist. Every nasty, scorned, lousy woman is a feminist. Just because feminism is women movement doesn't mean every ill-mannered individual should be identified as one. There is nothing about the movement that encourage women to act irrationally. It definitely doesn't exonerate women from taking responsibility of their actions. I just want to believe a lot people have the wrong definition of what the movement stands for and it's saddening. In a world, where every information is online for all to see, ignorance is a disease. The moment you identify as feminist, they believe you're not fit for a relationship. Because they will believe you're uncontrollable and definitely won't be submissive. That's stereotypical, apart from the movement. There is something called "individual difference". That you've met a scorned woman that identify as feminist don't make every other women mentally unfit for relationship. The craziest part is that some women can't even define the word "feminism" but use it as an avenue to avert responsibility and dodge accountability. Which is why everyone should really get enlightened themselves on the movement.

I believe in feminism and I have no problem being submissive but I will never let the blind lead me. I don't believe in domination, same way I won't let anyone dominate me. I want to speak to be heard and I also want to listen to others and make them feel heard.

  8. Before you become a feminist, you must have money. You cannot be shouting feminism, meanwhile you cannot buy petrol for generator or pay part of your kids fees.

  9. Toxic feminism is the problem. They don't understand what true feminism is/means. They think feminism is anti-men or general hostility and disregarding men. No.

  10. A lot of us are so ignorant in understanding what feminism is all about. Especially Nigerian MEN. Once they hear feminism these days they get angry…. People want to see feminism in a negative light.let’s go back to history and the start of the feminist movement, women were not allowed to speak, they were thought unintelligent and could not make decisions for themselves or others, they were not even allowed to get an education, vote, and the list goes on and on…. Without that movement a lot of women saw Hell. The men treated women so badly, husbands abandoned their wives with no money and no means of care( no work, no education, no help).. Fathers treated daughters badly, brothers did same, then husbands and then men generally….. it is always injustice and suffering and pain that brings a change… My point is feminism is also a positive thing, it is just a right as a human being ( women) to be able to speak for yourself and protect yourself when and if necessary.

  11. We have always had feminists in Nigeria. Lack of awareness is making it seem that it is a new thing. To me feminism is being ambitious and unapologetic about ur achievement. Feminism is action and not words. True feminist are Chief Bola Kuforiji, Onyeka Onwenu and all those business women that are making waves in Nigeria before and now using their intelligence.
