Nigeria's Minister Of Women Affairs Uju Kennedy-Ohaneye Probed Over Alleged Diversion Of N1.5Billion

The Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohaneye was on Tuesday, July 9, 2024 grilled by The House of Representatives Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development over failure to pay the sum of N1.5 billion to contractors after the money was released to her.

Th<is committee was set up after it received a petition from the contractors over the non payment of contracts they did for the Ministry which led to the summoning of the Minister to appear before it to explain the reason behind the non payment.

The Committee also ordered the suspension of all 2024 contracts by the Ministry of Women Affairs until the rationale behind the non payment of tuition has been explained.
Explaining the reasons for the non payment, The Women Affairs Minister said the funds were not released to the Ministry but the committee immediately faulted her claim, stating that the Director Finance and Accounts had confirmed the release of the funds for the contracts.
The Committee further queried the N45m said to have spent in organizing New Year celebrations for children and another N20m to purchase soaps and sanitary pads for New Year Babies.
The committee also queried the N1.5m the Minister spent on fuelling vehicles on a trip to Anambra State but the Minister justified the expenses.

On further probe into the alleged infractions by the Ministry, it generated into a shouting spree between the Minister and the panel, as she started accusing the committee of not giving her a fair hearing.

    3. That is a lie. You think the men don't do worse? The expenses they listed above are reasonablegiven the cost of items. She travelled by road while her peers are renting private jets. She has been active in matters pertaining to women and children. Did anyone know the name of the minister that she took over from? Was that one probed for inefficiency? Let's try to be fair please.

  2. Sweet Jesus!
Why are we like this in this country? Even women too?
They should make a law and start jailing them for years like they do in some sane countries. Not the one that they will give them 10 months jail sentence.

    1. 45 million is very low if you compare what other ministries spend. Someone was asked by a minister to put 45 million as the cost of a party they submitted 3m quote for over 12 years ago. The person refused because the markup was too much and lost the contract that they had long before that minister came in. She should fight that panel to a stand still. Rubbish and ingredient.

  20. I'm concerned about the allegations of mismanaged funds and the lack of payment to contractors. Transparency and accountability are crucial in government ministries. I hope the committee can get to the bottom of this and ensure that funds are being used effectively and efficiently.
