This was made known by ex-Super Eagles media officer, Toyin Ibitoye in a post on X.com on Saturday.
He wrote, “News just in. Finidi George #FinidiGeorge_FG has resigned from his #NGSuperEagles manager position.”
The resignation follows the Nigeria Football Federation’s (NFF) decision to appoint a foreign coach to oversee him, despite his recent appointment in May.
George, 53, took the reins after Jose Peseiro’s contract ended in February, having served as his assistant for 20 months. However, the team’s disappointing performance in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin led to his demotion.
As a result, George’s one-year contract will be downgraded, and his reported monthly salary of N15m will be reduced to N5m. His handpicked assistants will also be replaced by the new foreign coach’s staff.
In a meeting with Sports Minister John Enoh, George expressed his frustration with the lack of support from the NFF and questioned the commitment of Nigeria’s top players in the crucial World Cup qualifiers.

ReplyDeleteRather unfortunately, we ain't going to world cup. Can't see how we can turn around.
We need to build a team first. I remember how Mikel Obi would arrive training with 2 left legs and be purposely running into people when wearing Nigeria's jersey only to return to being a superstar once he returns to his foreign club. The national team is a burden to experienced, well placed players and so, they are not going to risk injury to play exceptionally or even listen to any coach under immense pressure to front them and earning about 10k a month with no pension plan or tenure.
ReplyDeleteIf we are truly serious, go for those still hoping to be signed internationally and prioritise their training and slots even above those who are the 3rd eleven from European national teams who's surnames have now become useful. Not every player is or can afford to be like Musa, Yekini or Onyeama.
