Amnesty International, on Wednesday, reported that at least 540 people have been killed within the first two months of this year by armed invaders in rural communities of four local government areas in Benue State. Mrs Barbara Magaji, the programme manager of Amnesty International, made the revelation during a press conference in Makurdi.


At least 100 houses have been razed by a cooking gas explosion in Jamata, a community in Lokoja Local Government Area of Kogi State. It was learnt that the explosion, which happened on Wednesday, brought down buildings and destroyed properties worth millions of naira.

 The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, ended their closed-door meeting on Wednesday with an agreement that all contentious issues would be amicably resolved to avert a strike. ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, who led the union’s team, told newsmen after the meeting that the negotiation process had begun.

 The Senate is expected to convene an emergency plenary to consider President Bola Tinubu’s supplementary appropriation for the 2024 fiscal year today. Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Yemi Adaramodu (APC, Ekiti South) disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday.

 President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday called on Nigerians to redouble efforts in the fight against drug abuse and trafficking in the country. He also urged support for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency in its fight against substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking.

Tragedy struck on Tuesday at the Ribang (Mbang) village in the Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State after six Junior Secondary School students drowned in the Mbang river while coming back after writing their Junior Secondary School Certificate Examination at about 5:30 pm.

 Director General of Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr Jide Idris, has said a state of emergency may be declared for cholera if cases exceed a controllable level. He said the agency was still awaiting reports from teams conducting investigations.

 President Bola Ahmed Tinubu does not discriminate against the North, Vice President Kashim Shettima reassured on Wednesday. Speaking in Kano State, the VP said his principal was not working against the region’s interests.

 A Federal High Court, Abuja, has again adjourned the suit seeking the removal of Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje as National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, until July 5. Justice Inyang Ekwo, on Wednesday, adjourned the matter to allow the plaintiff respond to a fresh application filed by Ganduje to challenge the competence of the suit.

  1. Naija ppl talk about thunder fire so much that every day is some great fire or explosion that is taking place. Perhaps it’s time to stop that saying, as it seems to attract nothing but destruction.

    Condolences to the young ppl who drowned. The govt needs to send out psa on water safety. River current is invisible until you get into the water and it pulls you away. And rivers can be much deeper than expected. What a sorrow for the families. May their souls rip.
