Aviation Minister Keyamo Rants Over Begging And Extortion Ongoing At Nigeria's International Airports

The Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo on Sunday June 23, 2024 decried reports of begging and extortion going on at International airports in the country by some unscrupulous individuals.

In a post on his official X handle, the Minister lamented that the activities of staff begging and extorting travellers have been bringing a bad image to the nation.
He claimed that his cell phone beeps every minute with messages from concerned citizens who continue to complain about the matter.

The Minister clarified that “most of the agencies involved in this menace are not under the control of the Aviation Ministry, though they are stationed at our airports.
“However, I have been working closely with other Ministers, arms of government and agencies who are responsible for these agencies and a solution is in sight soon”.

    1. Virtually all the agencies at the airport are guilty, they beg, coarse, threatene and even deliberately delay you so you miss your flight just to ensure you cough out something.

    3. This has been going on for decades. It's not about any hunger but people taking advantage of others with their position of authority. As far back as 3 decades ago, this has been occurring at airports. Even Fela's arrest leading to imprisonment stemmed from this. KSA's first album from Roisin iye or was it mukmukson was pirated by someone lifting a copy from the airport and that was probably in the 60s. When the NYPD, LAPD, CIA and other agencies were infiltrated by spies, drug dealers, mafia or covered up racially motivated crimes, which hunger was disturbing the USA? Now that American airport agents steal people's money, laptops and other valuables and even use their position to traffic drugs and engage in human trafficking, which hunger is disturbing then that Nigerians are rushing to experience? It's just Nigerians who love to confess negatively and against their own selves and their nation.

Atta Mills complained of this in Ghana as well but stated that he knows many travellers willingly appreciate the staff there and he doesn't discourage that but the harassment of people who don't have or can't give should stop. Even the American police accept coffee donuts from citizens and provided the meal isn't past a certain amount, you can pick up their tab at certain establishments. As a student on a tight budget, it was sometimes annoying with people thinking you owe them something but I've also had good service of late that I am happy to appreciate. One officer I met in a government agency would even send private texts to inform you to pick up your items in a formal and respectful manner which I really appreciated. . At the airport sometimes, I have had one higher up even decline my cash gift and wish me well.

Keyamo already highlighted this in another press conference that these uniformed touts need to be confronted with technology that creates distance between the agency staff and travelers but for international travel, once you fill that form and state your occupation or you're flying business or higher, even the decently paid airport staff are drooling o so if you have, exide a giving spirit 🀣. Gate to aircraft should add up to like 30k since I'm not in government or being sponsored. 3k here, 4k there, it helps with preventing delays and I don't mind as I do the same at supermarkets, offices or anywhere I receive good service. It's the entitlement mentality and the criminal approach that even puts ones itinerary at risks that is irksome. I make out time to gift the staff cleaning the toilets as well as they are not usually seen and because they work for an agency, may not be well mobilised in such an area where food would be expensive and transportation also costly.

  3. No need to rant Keyamo. Set traps for them and catch them expose them and sack them. Use them to do example so others can learn. They will be disgracing their ancestors when the are not beggars, instead of them to work. Too much touts and people loafing about in our airports! Here in Sweden if you don't have any business in the airport you monitored with cameras.

  4. It didn't start today with the agencies, some will not want to collect Naira sef, demanding for hard currencies and I am not sure it's ending soon.Even the Local wing is also not left out, when you're departing, you don't see anyone asking you for money but as soon as you land and going towards the arrival, you see different people begging you for money.

  5. It's everywhere.
I arrived ShopRite complex yesterday evening, the begging started from the security men at the gate, they didn't even bother to check my car booth , then all those other ones when entering the building, then inside the building itself..

Truth is I don't blame them, feeding is now luxury in the country, but this act is actually harassment, it'll make some people stop patronising there, tips go won pass the amount of the thing wey you go buy sef

  8. This thing has been happening for a very long time, even before now. 2021 when I was going to Seychelles from Abuja International Airport just because I refuse to part with money, they scattered my undies on the floor. Opened my sanitary pad checking for what I don't know. I jejely packed my things without complaining. But he was pained I didn't give him anything.

  9. Even airline staff are guilty of this. Lufthansa needs to do better in every way. Their customer service is zero and their staff can beg! Mschew
