Nobel Laureate Prof Wole Soyinka Reveals His Problem With IPOB Activist Nnamdi Kanu

Nobel Laureate Prof Wole Soyinka has said the only problem he had with the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu was his language, which he described as disrespectful and inciteful.

In a recent interview with Noble Nigeria, the literary icon noted that Kanu did nothing wrong by calling for a separate nation of Biafra, noting that the separatist leader “was never accused of physically bombing any place or killing anyone”.

He said, “He is one of the younger generations who inherited a burden of defeat, of resentment and a determination in their view, not to make the mistakes of their predecessors.

“They have a new will, they have a new understanding of history. The only problem I had with it was the language Nnamdi Kanu used over Radio Biafra. I listened to some of it, very incendiary and also disrespectful, I thought, of even his own people. I don’t want to go into details but all you have to do is listen to it.

“I used a certain expression in recent contributions, those of us who stood on that side, we fought for a Biafra of conscience and for me, that is very critical.
“People like Nnamdi Kanu should not, IPOB or MASSOB (Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra) for that matter, should not act against what I call the core of our humanity, which is one of conscience.”

He also described the detention of Kanu by the Nigerian government as a mistake.

Kanu was extraordinarily renditioned to Nigeria from Nairobi in June 2021 by former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration with the help of the Kenyan government.

The separatist leader has been detained by the Department of State Services since he was brought to Nigeria in June 2021 and is facing charges related to broadcasts alleged to have been made in furtherance of terrorism.
However, Soyinka described the action of the Nigerian government as “kidnapping”.

  1. This Soyinka is the most tribalistic elder stateman in the country. He was there when MC Olumo threatened the Igbos not to come out in Lagos to vote. He organized a protest when Jonathan was in power and fuel then was N190 but now it is N850, he kept mute. Tinubu instructed his boys to ran away with the ballot box during election, and obviously rigged it with INEC and Judiciary, Gbajue was quite. Now the hunger in the country is driving some persons to commit suicide, he turned blind eye. All his concerns is about an Igbo man gaining relevance or freedom in the country, nothing lasts forever.

    1. Anon 09:49 you called a man who fought for Biafra tribalist? Wow! You need to listen to history from the mouths of your elders who witnessed and were part of the making and not just pick up misinformation on the net.

    2. Don't mind these children that have been fed meals of hatred and bitterness, Wole Soyinka did not only fight for Biafra but was jailed for fighting for Biafra. See them insult a man that will clock 90years in July!
Peter Obi was busy making money when others were fighting for Democracy before 1999, but today he is their only hero of democracy.
i have absolutely no issues with PO but this idea that everybody must support him is what i totally reject. His supporters happily insult other politicians but get angry when it's done to him.
He called APC and PDP 'structures of criminality' but his supporters have no issues with him going back to one of the 'criminality' parties

  3. This statement he made, “ He is one of the younger generations who inherited a burden of defeat, of resentment and a determination in their view, not to make the mistakes of their predecessors” hits the mail on the head in general regarding Nigeria as a whole. A lot of youths are of this mindset hence the older generations are cashing in and out of it politically or otherwise. When we realize the truth, we will stand side by side, take the country by the horn and do the needful. In hindsight,

May we not be be so caught up in this tribal war and (a) Non Nigerian(s) will take over the country.

  6. I think that controversy made us to know who he is today " Kanu " but maybe never the best and furthermore the Nigeria govt should found another way of handling the situation because keeping him in detention for that long, might make him come out stronger against them this time.
