Addressing journalists at the ministerial press briefing a week ago, Adelabu criticised Nigerians who keep their freezers and air conditioners on when they are not home.
He said Nigerians lack the culture of power consumption management due to its affordability.
He had said, “A lot of people will come back from work, they want to have dinner, or they want to see their colleagues down the road, they switch on the AC for the room to be cooling before they come back.
“Some people will be going to work in the morning, a freezer that you left on for days, they will still leave it on when all the items in the freezer are frozen and 5, 6, 8 hours of their absence will not make it to defreeze, they will still leave it to be consuming power just because we are not paying enough.
“We have all been overseas before; we know how conscious the power consumers are about electricity consumption.”
And appearing on Thursday’s edition of Channels Television’s Politics Today, the minister said he had no intention to insult anyone.
“It was never intended to insult the sensibility of Nigerians. Sincerely, if you watch that video very well, i never said people should switch off their freezers,” he said.
“It was actually an innocent advice with regards to energy consumption management which we believe will go a long way in reducing people’s energy bills.
“And that advice was actually directed to those we believe because of the recent increase in tariff that start enjoying 20 to 22 hours of power supply. What I said was that the fact that the electricity tariff for Band A, which is 15 percent of electricity consumers, would increase by over 200 percent does not necessarily translate to 200 percent of their electricity bills if power is managed in terms of consumption.
“But the example of the freezer, well, may not have gone down well with majority of Nigerians and I’ll say oh, sorry about that. It was never my intention to insult anybody.
“It was just out of my passion and eagerness to see that we make a change in the sector which has suffered a lot of set back for some years… in fact, the example I gave there were the air conditioners.
“A lot of people leave them on while they’re still not in the room. Sincerely, it was passed across jokingly. It was just a comical illustration and never intended to insult anybody. So, to Nigerians who felt offended by the statement I say sorry, forgive us. This is our country.”

Okay oo, you're forgiven. But the recent increment in tariff is pure wickedness on the masses considering the hardship we're going through already.
ReplyDeleteHe has no right making such statement in the first place. Goes to show he has little knowledge of his JD. The region he is comparing Nigeria to has consistent supply of electricity, AND, their weather doesn’t encourage freezing of food because they have constant fresh meals and rarely have left overs or cook in large quantities to save gas.
DeleteIf Nigeria has constant light, there will be more fridges than freezers in our homes.
Speak with sense and decorum but first, AS A PUBLIC FIGURE IN OFFICE. 😊
What you said is actually not true. No where in the world with constant electricity do people turn off their refrigerators. You can decrease the temperature vice versa and if there is electricity interruption for up to a week, county government distribute ice so people can store their perishable. And electricity will tell you to leave your ac at optimum temperatures and avoid turning it on and off and it consumes more electricity if you do so. This man wanted to make one of the stupid speeches our Nigerian politicians make when they wanted to rip the populace off without any valid reason and he still has no valid reason for the hike in electricity.
DeleteLight has even become epileptic since he became minister. He better resign
DeleteNonsense comment, but you enjoy 24hrs power supply if you travel abroad.
ReplyDeleteGbam. They are quick to pick and impose the ones that Favour them but turn a blind eye on doing the necessary things that the citizens can gain from.
DeleteDon't mind him, ode ni. I will switch off my fridge/ freezer when I'm going out for the 3 hours a day electricity and sometimes none for days.
DeleteAnd how many people have you seen going out with their AC on in this country, if I'm going to my bedroom, I should switch off the AC in the living room?
This man must be on cheap high drugs and completely clueless as regards his job function because the power situation has never been this bad!
With their yeye power supply, I should still turn off my freezer so the little ice helping my food not to go bad should defrost right? What a joke? Who leaves their AC on when not at home? Smh
ReplyDelete😅😅😅
DeleteExactly 💯, what I just commented above. Is it with the tiny power we see Occasionally I should now switch off the freezer when going out? Mtcheww...
DeleteEven abroad where they have unlimited power, they don't switch off their fridge when going out. And I have never seen anyone deliberately leave their AC on when going out.
It's well...
ReplyDeleteWhy do they hate us so much. They hate to see or hear any Nigerian is experiencing any form of luxury yet they go abroad to charge their phone. Thank God say God no be man
ReplyDeleteYou have noticed that, right. 😥
DeleteLol, to charge their phones abroad 🤣 😂 😅.
DeleteRubbish talk. When you are using 24hr power supply in your house.
ReplyDelete🤣🤣children of the internet have dealt with him. That's what happens when you talk carelessly on a public forum.
ReplyDelete🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 dragged his existence by the juggler 😂. He doesn’t even give light and he felt he has a right to speak 😀😄
DeleteExactly hmmmmmm this social media is so powerful. The same manner that they have dragged attention addict Daddy GO like I pass my neighbour Gen.
DeleteThe most complex B
Does what he say ring a bell? yes. Nigerians hate when you hit them with the truth. Most of us do all these things he said, but still want to insult him and make it look like a lie. Majority switched to prepaid and managed light better.
ReplyDeleteMy neighbor before we began using prepaid instructed his kids to always switch on the AC in the evening so the room will get cool before he comes back from work. All of us use hot plate in the building and freezer is always on. Now everyone manage light with red eye because we use prepaid. We should reduce insults and learn to pick some corrections while still praying for a better performance from them all. Let’s do our own part please.
Na so na. Even the little things of life one cannot enjoy and you fools will be there to defend them. All things being equal, wont you love to come home from work to a cool room? Keep defending rubbish
DeleteMiss Aboki, must you insult? Fool kill you there.
DeleteIts usually better at the the alter side of the pulpit where you would not be questioned even if you make no sense
ReplyDeleteWhy won't we leave our freezers on when you and your people supple less than 5hours electricity everyday. We should buy expensive food and still let it go bad? In the countries you sited, is it three hours light that the give them? abi in your own house, you only use light for 4 hours in a day??
ReplyDeleteMctheeeeew
Thank you, you made a sensible comment.
DeleteHow can we put off our freezers and fridges when we hardly have power in our homes.
Since they love to see Nigerians suffer, they should continue.
It's well
ReplyDeleteWith all due respect sir...you dey ment. Is it the light that I see four hours or less per day that I will now turn off my freezer when going to work or out? Right now my freezer is defrosted cos nomlight for two days now and I can buy fuel. Food is expensive, gas is expensive, fuel is expensive, toiletries and provisions are no longer affordable and now you want to choke us with high electricity bills for light we don't we don't even see regularly.
ReplyDeleteOlodo Minister, Minister of darkness.
ReplyDeleteMumu man that is why you can't rule oyo state
