The decision was made by the Emeabiam Community in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State.
The ceremony reportedly reached its climax when the Umuegeolu kindred formally handed Betty over to Professor Wole Akeredolu, indicating the family’s desire to continue having her within their fold after her husband’s demise.
Prior to this symbolic gesture, customary offerings of kolanuts, palm wine, and a she-goat were presented to the Umuegeolu kindred by the Akeredolus, adhering to tradition.
In response, Professor Wole Akeredolu expressed gratitude to the Umuegeolu kindred and the entire Emeabiam Community for their hospitality.
He affirmed the Akeredolu family’s commitment to continue caring for Betty, acknowledging the support received during the mourning period and the interment ceremony held in Owo.
The Mgbafu Mkpe ceremony, a traditional Igbo practice, signifies the transition of a widow back to her husband’s family following his passing.
It involves the mutual agreement between both families, with rituals performed accordingly.

In Yoruba land of today, nope.

DeleteMost times sex is not involved at least, among the elites.
DeleteHe is just to continue caring for her needs and lend his support where necessary.
They will widows to their late husband’s siblings too in my place, my Dad actually got one several years older than him when I was young.
He took care of her till she died and stood in as the husband.๐
Dem too old 4 d other room duties. Maybe gisting partners and small smooching.
DeleteIt means nobody can tell her she not from Ondo State any more. Don't be surprised to see her "poster" next season or see her asking for her rights somewhere or somehow
DeleteHow do you expect 72 years old woman to be having sex? Most of our old people frowned at that.

ReplyDeleteWow! Is za oza room tings also involved? The Akeredolus seem to be a nice family and her family is happy with them.
DeleteUsually other room isn't meant to be but some ojukokoro men will leave thier wife and start sleeping with the widow, some widow's end up starting a family with them. It's displeasing to the ears
DeleteDoes this mean she can't marry someone else if she wants to?
ReplyDeleteI don't think grandma will be interested in marrying another man at this her age.
DeleteFrom my mother side they will ask her if she want to stay or leave

ReplyDeleteLets correct some misconception here. This is one of the response I read from the post on Facebook and I think it makes sense.

Aketi brother did not take over Betty Akeredolu as speculated by pple on social media SUPO Like we call it in Yoruba land. No it is far from it. It's a tradition on the part of Aketi wife with the tribe she hails from in IMO, when a Woman of their family loses her husband, their tradition warrant the Woman to come back home and if the family of the husband want her to still remain in the family as their wife, they would come back for her like they did initially when they went to Marry her! It's not really like she was tied with any man again In the family!
This is not supo for sexual or marriage. They need to break kola and accept to take her back to her husband relations and they must hand her over to the next responsibile man that the husband family present. It is not for marrying the Prof. Akeredolu, It is transfer of responsibilities. Does Madame Betty look like she want to be tied down? Dey play o Tenk u
Okay. T for tenks!
DeleteThanks for the explanation
DeleteThis made more sense. Thank you.
DeleteWell done ๐
DeleteWhen she has grown up kids with male inclusive, what is she returning back to her father's house for?
ReplyDeleteSometimes Igbo culture especially Imo and Abia can be confusing jare
She is older than her former husband by 4 yrs maybe this one is 2 yrs younger than his late brother ,mama has gotten blood cleanser '" she will be getting younger everyday while our brother .....barbaric culture...and being a lawyer she still accepted this ,;there is something she is looking for in that family and state.
ReplyDeleteLooking for in the State!
DeleteThat's her State by marriage and likely all her records.
All her children are from that State and Imo State.
This is one of the privileges of trans States and transnational marriages.
You sound so ignorant. Please educate yourself. Thank you.
DeleteYou see this life? It will always confuse even the most wise person. Her husband still left her a widow despite the fact she is older by 4years. No matter what we plan, God alone determines the future.
DeleteThanks for enlighten
ReplyDeleteMany of the functional illiterates roaming the internet are as ignorant as they are depraved. May God continue to be with both families.
