The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has slammed a fresh charge at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory against the embattled former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele.
According to the charge, EFCC accused Emefiele of approving the printing of N684,590,000 at N18.96 billion.
In a four-count charge sheet seen on Tuesday, the EFCC alleged that Emefiele broke the law with intent to harm the public during his implementation of the naira swap policy of the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The anti-graft agency also accused Emefiele of unlawfully approving the withdrawal of N124.8 billion from the Consolidated Revenue Fund of the Federation.
“That you, GODWIN IFEANYI EMEFIELE, between the 19th day of October 2022 and March 5 2023 in Abuja, knowingly disobeyed the direction of Section 19 of the CBN Act, 2007, by approving the printing of N375,520,000.00 pieces of colour swapped N1, 000, at the total cost of N11,052, 068,062 without the recommendation of the Board of Central Bank and the strict approval of the President, Federal Republic of Nigeria which conduct of yours caused injury to the public and you thereby committed an offence”, the charge partly reads.
Recall that Emefiele was on November 18, 2023, arraigned before the court on six counts of procurement.
He was also accused of abusing his office by approving a contract to acquire 43 vehicles totalling N1.2 billion from 2018 to 2020.
On Monday, April 8, 2024, the EFCC arraigned the former banker alongside one Henry Omoile before Justice R.A. Oshodi of the Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, for an alleged $4.5 billion and N2.8 billion fraud.
On June 9, 2023, Emefiele was suspended by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Since then, the government has investigated the management of the CBN during his tenure.

Menhhhhh...This man did a lot.
ReplyDeleteThis man is spending the rest of his life with EFCC
ReplyDeleteThey should just give this man life imprisonment for the atrocities he committed and the ones he is yet to commit. Add everything up.and sentence him for life. Haba.
ReplyDeleteForgetting not to collect all the funds he stole, INCLUDING HIS OWN. He must learn his wicked lessons, the hard way. Such a wicked man.
DeleteMy shock is shocked. Emefiele, you really did us shege.
ReplyDeleteThis is so annoying, all this embezzlement , while people were suffering..
ReplyDeleteSMH.
Yet, some people continue to spin conspiracy theories to make this man look innocent.
ReplyDeleteA man that rose to the level of Zenith bank MD was already a billionaire many times over before being made CBN governor. He therefore should have had the courage to take a walk from the CBN job even if assuming anyone was putting him under pressure to do anything bad.
It is greed, money is never enough. That's why I don't pity him one bit.
DeleteHe could have stepped down from that position, but mbanu.
Emiefele, your mind no go touch ground for what you put Nigerians through those few months last year.
Wicked soul
ReplyDeleteEveryone is shouting he is evil but wasn’t he doing these things for the benefit of powerful people in the past administration? Weren’t APC leaders particularly the presidency the biggest beneficiaries of his largess??? They should quit faking simply because he sided with others during the election. Clearly a case of witch-hunting. Our current president should come out and swear on his grandkids that he didn’t and isn’t currently partaking in corruption on a larger scale in Lagos.
ReplyDeleteI hope the money is worth their souls because it’s laced with the blood of the innocent. No amount of sara can cleanse the punishment that comes with willingly eating from blood money. Nigerians are in pain and dying because of these people and anyone happily collecting their own share for whatever purpose will have the curse of deprivation visited on their children and their children and children’s children. Insha allah!
You tell us that he did it for APC leaders, couldn't he have resigned when put under pressure, assuming that is true.
DeleteSanusi Lamido Sanusi challenged GEJ's government and was removed, but he wasn't prosecuted because he certainly didn't soil his fingers in the CBN.
I said this then but they almost killed me with words. His supporters bullied me with words.
ReplyDeleteHere we are now
See e face
ReplyDeleteOh Lord
ReplyDeleteSee The Wicked ness of An Animal in human form
Chaii
Let him riot in jail ooo..
Oma ever see Yayaya Bella own. I no sabi e own & Emefiele own much worse pass.
ReplyDeleteCompromising your ethics in your career will lead to destruction. God may not be done with him, but the Nigeria is. He will never come back from this, he is finished professionally and may never know a day of true freedom for the rest of his life. There is no job worth ruining yourself for, quit if you will be forced to cross certain ethical lines and this should not have been difficult for him since he was already independently wealthy. Why ruin your name and cause yourself and family members such stress and embarrassment.
ReplyDeleteYahaya Bello looks messier than this man’s own. Even d former minister for Aviation too. In all of this, where is Bubu, that was their boss?
ReplyDeleteUntil they prosecute Edu…I will call this fight against corruption one sided .
ReplyDeleteThis man had a boss at whose table the buck stops, why is the boss still a freeman? I am sure all these happened in support/in line with his bosses approval.
