After the recent undersea cable cuts that challenged connectivity in many countries in the West African region, Nigeria has called for a coordinated and multilateral approach by the region to protect shared telecommunications infrastructure and diversify connectivity to ensure uninterruptible connection.
The Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Aminu Maida, emphasized the importance of securing telecom infrastructure for fostering Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and enhancing investor confidence in the West African sub-region. By ensuring the security of these vital assets, the region can attract more investment, spur economic growth, and enhance competitiveness on the global stage.
To achieve this, Nigeria proposes setting up a framework for joint monitoring, risk mitigation, and emergency response procedures for the submarine cables that pass through the sub-region. Additionally, the West Africa Telecommunications Regulatory Assembly (WATRA) Working Group on Infrastructure should expand its mandate to develop a comprehensive strategy for safeguarding the subregion’s telecommunications networks and associated infrastructure, thereby proactively bolstering resilience against future disruptions.

Very necessary and important. Else we will wake up one morning and see that there's no network signal on our phones.
ReplyDeleteOnce there's network shutdown, every business transactions relating to banking and transfers will be crippled except for those using the Elon Musk network Starlink.
