NIGERIA OPENS LAND AND AIR BORDERS WITH REPUBLIC OF NIGER, LIFTS OTHER SANCTIONS
President Bola Tinubu has directed the opening of Nigeria's land and air borders with the Republic of Niger and the lifting of other sanctions against the country with immediate effect.
This directive is in compliance with the decisions of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government at its extraordinary summit on February 24, 2024, in Abuja.
ECOWAS leaders had agreed to lift economic sanctions against the Republic of Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea.
The President has directed that the following sanctions imposed on the Republic of Niger be lifted immediately:
(1) Closure of land and air borders between Nigeria and Niger Republic, as well as ECOWAS no-fly zone on all commercial flights to and from Niger Republic.
(2) Suspension of all commercial and financial transactions between Nigeria and Niger, as well as freeze of all service transactions, including utility services and electricity to Niger Republic.
(3) Freeze of assets of the Republic of Niger in ECOWAS Central Banks and freeze of assets of the Republic of Niger, state enterprises, and parastatals in commercial banks.
(4) Suspension of Niger from all financial assistance and transactions with all financial institutions, particularly EBID and BOAD.
(5) Travel bans on government officials and their family members.
President Tinubu has also approved the lifting of financial and economic sanctions against the Republic of Guinea.
Those countries no even send their papa. With or without ECOWAS, their progress is steady
ReplyDeleteWhy I commend this move by the ECOWAS, I want Nigeria as a country to draw a lesson from this whole issue.
ReplyDeleteWhat is the lesson?
Your ability to stand and still function very well economically and productively in the midst of sanctions and strangulations.
Will Nigeria today survive economic sanctions from UN and ECOWAS? I doubt and I think it's difficult seeing that we import almost everything we need in the country and depend on foreign loan.
I could remember during the Abacha era, Nigeria was sanctioned by UN which made Nigeria to miss an international football tournament. Abacha stood his ground on Nigerian right by calling the bluff of the whites. While it lasted, Nigeria was doing very well economically.
So in essence, Niger, Burkina Faso, Mali and Guinea have all shown one thing in common - they can't be forced or pushed to dance to a tune they don't want and that's a great win and more also a good one to measure a country's strength and supremacy.
Nigeria need to get to that point where we will solely depend on local production if shove comes to push. A point where sanctions can't bring us to our needs. That's the point I was Nigeria to take from this all.
After all the rigmarole and threat by France and ECOWAS, heaven did not fall. At the end, it was a win for the Nigerien and the juntas.

Niger no send you because the president addressed you as puppet of the western world.
We have to move away from the European mindset. Work together to find solutions unless things are so broken that no solution can be found. Even with Russia they all still buying Russian oil. Find the solution for the region to get stronger together
ReplyDeleteGood
ReplyDeleteI will rather tell you NO than to make empty promises. How does it feels like to tell people that you will 'Do this ', assure them that you will do it , turn out is all for play.
ReplyDeleteI feel like that when you make a promise, the other mind is waiting for it to be fulfilled. Imagine how it feels when you later say No when you are supposed to say No initially.
You see all the promises they made to Nigerians during campaign, at the end they feel disappointed and keep grumbling till the next election.
Better, ECOWAS was founded to promote economic growth of the region and not to propagate Western democracy! If the citizens of Niger, Mali, Guinea and Burkinafaso are Ok with military regime, e no ,"konsain" ECOWAS. Focus on economic liberation and regional security.
