Nigeria's Organised Labour Threatens To Go On Strike In A Forthnight

Organised Labour on Thursday, February 8, 2024 threatened to declare a nationwide strike in the next 14 days over the alleged failure of the federal government of Nigeria to implement the memorandum of understanding reached with the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress in October 2023.

    1. They should be serious. Salary seriously delayed and when paid its 50k less. No explanation.

    2. And where is that money going to come from as those going on strike have refused to increase production or efficiency and also don't want want to be fired?

How many civil servants hold jobs that contribute positively to the budget or inflow into government coffers asides from their PAYE? What are people on government welfare in the name of employment in most ministries at state and national level adding to national wealth?

When the government again borrows in dollars to give you one naira and places another 50 naira debt on your head as the cost of eating your future, who will be poorer and still complain?

If the government prints the money, flooding the market with naira so that Nigerians can again spend it on Milo and indomie then wait for another alert the next month, are they aware that this will automatically trigger inflation, weakening the naira even further?

Have all these decades of freebies and subsidies without commensurate wealth creation on the side of the citizens who live in a world where they use powerful palm computers to insult each other but not to empower themselves taught Nigerians nothing?

Can you go to your private employer and demand 50 thousand a month when there is no commensurate increase in profits?

Adults face reality and logically tackle problems. Children throw tantrums and do what feels good.

    1. Can they or other Nigerians afford to go on any strike? Can people in a ship with a hole on it's side refuse to paddle? Did they keep the money for extra pay anywhere? Would they have gone on strike if it was their candidate that removed the subsidy as he campaign to? Is their party controlled state cushioning subsidy reduction (not removal) any better in the midst of heavy debt? Is the reduced subsidy and global inflation after reckless COVID currency printing not the origin of causing goods to be sold at higher prices? Did they not know that this is the unavoidable result in an import dependent country with caviar taste on a garri budget?

Didn't everyone campaign knowing the danger of that economic catastrophe of fuel subsidy and promise to remove it on day one? Can they claim that fuel still isn't being subsidized or when you watch the news, is it not clear what the price of crude is from which you can extrapolate last mile costs? ?

Have the labour leaders themselves cut down the cost of running their organisation and reduced worker dues? Have they cut down their own pay? Have they distributed any palliatives to their fellow comrades? Have they monitored the palliatives distribution in states and local government and given a report to Nigerians on how the 5 billion from the federal government was distributed per state? Do they have a report card published routinely for governors and LGA chairmen on their performance or palliative efforts? Have they even gotten states and LGAs to pay the 30k that has been the minimum wage for years now?

They should go on their usual exercise routine for a few days then come back. AASU do pass like that. No one went to beg them before they went back to pick their chalk.

President Tinubu should be done with dragging his feet. Obasanjo breathed easier after privatising NITEL, NUGA and other hiding places for entrenched entitlement. Let the refineries be bought by people ready to work and the electricity holdings by those who want to sell power. Privatise The airports and railways also Nigerians can know what they are paying for and get the bang for their buck. Direct palliatives in transportation, education and other areas directly to citizens via NIN- Based vouchers and let Nigerians invest in utilities and make their money back in multiples. When the customer is king, the people rejoice and friction between employers and employees are settled in the boardroom. Competition keeps prices low. Enough of these distractions.

  10. We have been paid two months, each month is 35k being palliative for subsidy removal by the FGN. I think it should be for 4 months before minimum wage is decided
