  It was a poor outing for Nigerian artistes, none of whom bagged an award at the 66th Grammy Awards ceremony held at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, United States on Sunday. Five artistes of Nigerian descent –  Davido;  Burna Boy;  Asake; Olamide baddo; and Ayra Starr; all lost out of the Grammy in their combined 10 nominations.


Ekiti State pupils and teachers of Apostolic Faith Group of Schools, Emure Ekiti, who were abducted last week, regained their freedom in the early hours of Sunday. Some parents and other relatives of the victims said the kidnappers freed the abductees after collecting N15m and other items, including fried rice, malt drinks, energy drinks and cigarettes.

The federal government has said that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has ceased assigning corps members to states considered “very unsafe.” The Minister of Youth, Jamila Ibrahim addressing the issue on Channels Television’s current affairs show, “Sunday Politics” revealed that the programme has taken safety precautions by deploying NYSC members solely to safe states, among other measures.

 Power generation on the national grid crashed to 59.9 megawatts around 12 pm on Sunday as the country’s grid witnessed a nationwide collapse. Data obtained from the Federal Ministry of Power showed that electricity generation on the grid plunged from 2,658.75MW at 11 am to 59.9MW by 12 noon on Sunday, as power distributors lost supply from the grid.

 The ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, has continued its dominance in the Senate with victory in Saturday’s by-elections in Ebonyi South and Yobe East districts. The party has 59 Senators. It is trailed by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, with 37 senators; the Labour Party, LP, has seven; the Social Democratic Party, SDP, two; New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, two; and All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, one.

The presidency, on Sunday, fired a salvo at former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar for his latest criticism on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic policies. In a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga, the presidency described Atiku as a hypocrite who has resolved to attack the government’s economic strategies without providing any alternative.

 A man identified as Mansir Shafiu was stabbed to death while attempting to prevent a ballot box from being snatched in Rigachikun, Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State, during the rerun elections. An eyewitness said as Mansur was trying to prevent thugs from snatching the ballot box, one of them brought out a knife and stabbed him

 A former governor of Yobe State, Senator Bukar Abba Ibrahim, is dead. According to reports, he died at a Hospital in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, on Sunday. The deceased governed the state from January 1992 to November 1993 during the Third Republic.

 The Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria, SCSN, has challenged the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ola Olukoyede, to expose the religious sects sponsoring terrorism in the country. In a statement by its President, Sheik AbdulRasheed Hadiyahtullah, the group demanded proper legal action against those found complicit in financing activities undermining the nation’s security.

 Gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram fighters have killed two construction workers and kidnapped three grasshopper hunters at Kukareta village along Maiduguri Road in Damaturu LGA of Yobe State. The terrorists attacked the town on Sunday around 3:00 am shooting sporadically for about one hour before they kidnapped three persons who came to the town to hunt for grasshoppers.
