The CEO of Access Holdings, Herbert Wigwe, has been feared killed in a chopper crash in California. He was reportedly on board with about five others believed to be his wife, son and Abimbola Ogunbanjo, the group chairman of Nigerian Exchange Group Plc, (NGX Group), when the helicopter crashed.


The price of cement has risen by 100 per cent in three years to a record high of N7,000, amid the spiralling inflation in the country. Findings showed that the price of cement ranged between N3,300 and N3,500 in Lagos and Ogun States in March 2021 but has jumped to between N6,500 and N7,000 in both states as of last week.

. Two people were reportedly killed while three others sustained injuries when a Toyota Camry car without a number plate said to have plunged into the Iju River along Ota-Idiroko Road in the Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State. The incident happened on Saturday.

 Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force Intelligence Bureau– Intelligence Response Team, have eliminated several suspected kidnappers, including kingpin, Musa Wada-Magaji, aka Sabo, in the Mpape area of Abuja. The killing of the bandits followed an attack on their hideouts in Mpape by police officers.

 The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, PFN, has asked President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency on security, saying the blood of innocent Nigerians is everywhere. Citing the cases of banditry, kidnapping and killings in Plateau, Ekiti, Benue, Kaduna states, among others, the Christian organisation lamented the lingering insecurity ravaging the nation.

 CAF president, Patrice Motsepe has called on President Bola Tinubu to submit a bid to host the FIFA World Cup, stating that ‘the best of Nigeria’ is back. Nigeria last hosted a FIFA tournament (the U-17 World Cup) in 2009, with South Africa the only country to have hosted the FIFA World Cup at the senior level.

 A socialite and a businessman in Ondo State, Sesan Adelabu, has reportedly committed suicide after killing his wife, Bolu, in Akure, the state capital. Unconfirmed sources alleged that the socialite caught his wife in bed with one of his security guards.

Cardiologists have advised people with underlying heart diseases and those who are emotionally attached to football to either not get involved or avoid getting overly excited during football matches and to take breaks as needed. The Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, WTO, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has expressed grief over the death of Access Holdings, Herbert Wigwe.

Okonjo-Iweala described Wigwe’s death in a chopper crash as terribly sad.

Posting on X, she wrote: “Terribly saddened by the news of the terrible loss of Herbert Wigwe , Group CEO Access Bank @HerbertOWigwe, his wife and son as well as Bimbo Ogunbanjo in a helicopter crash. My deepest sympathies and condolences to the Wigwe family, the Ogunbanjo family, Access Bank Group employees and Management @myaccessbank and my younger Brother Herbert’s partner Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede. May the souls of the departed rest in perfect peace.”
Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, said he was “deeply shaken” by Wigwe’s death.
Saraki said Wigwe’s death was a loss to the business community in Nigeria.
Posting his condolence on X, Saraki wrote: “I’m deeply shaken by the news of the helicopter crash in California that claimed the lives of my friend and brother, Herbert Wigwe, the Group Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings Plc, his dear wife, son, and Abimbola Ogunbanjo, the Group Chairman of Nigerian Exchange Group Plc, alongside two others.

“As we mourn his loss, we must view the passing of Herbert and these prominent individuals not just as a personal tragedy for their families but also as a significant loss for the business community and the nation at large.”

He said the deceased was instrumental in transforming what was once a small commercial bank into one of the top five banks in the nation.
