The Nigeria Police has finally arrested Mrs Adachukwu Okafor, a lawyer, who allegedly abused her 10-year-old house help.
Ohaeri Joseph, the Special Assistant on Media to the Minister of Women Affairs, in a statement, said the lawyer has been on the run since the news of her alleged crime broke on the internet.
The minister had earlier placed a N2 million reward for any information on the lawyer who disappeared after a video of her misdeeds went viral.
“Days after the Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs Uju Ohanenye, placed a N2 million bounty on an Onitsha-based lawyer, Mrs Adachukwu Okafor, for child abuse in Onitsha, she has been arrested.
“The lady’s action, which went viral across various social media platforms, was alleged to have inflicted bodily harm on the minor.
“The lady has been on the run for weeks after being reported to have inflicted severe injuries on the minor, which prompted the minister to place a reward of N2 million for information on her whereabouts,” he said.
Ohaeri said the ministry will partner with the police to begin an immediate investigation into the matter.
“The girl is still undergoing medical treatment in the hospital, but I can assure members of the public that she will get justice,” the statement added.

DeleteEvery where in the world, childcare isn't just a mother's job and in the cultural context where the physically stronger person becomes a domestic nuisance after getting back home with his 60%, the woman who has the added burden of small children, in-laws, home work, husband in addition to work and saving that 1 million her husband wants to borrow so her online pastor won't call her useless, the least that can be done for her is to get her the qualified help she needs and pay for it if the family cannot afford to live decently off a single income.
I think what needs to happen is people locally, people should pay for quality labour and as police officer Dolapo was advising on a similar issue years back, the authorities at the local and state levels should mediate using our laws. Each ward, the actual parents and their guardian should register at the police station or with a JP or lawyer with clearly spelt out responsibilities: education, a fund for the child instead of the parents taking majority, privacy eg her own room, healthcare etc so those giving birth can know if they can afford it financially or if they need to find someone else to abuse physically, sexually or otherwise.
A 10 year old has no business feeding her parents and lacks the discipline, strength, interest and even reasoning to care for a child without extensive adult supervision. If you want to assist a young relative, she is supposed to be watching her siblings ( your kids) at home and preventing them from eating sand, playing with them and making sure they come home on time. Maybe washing plates for lunch twice a week, bathing her siblings, dressing them up and cleaning up after herself, not doing the job of a child minder. People do this to get cheap labor and parents do this to reduce their feeding bill and increase their own income without doing any work.
There are children who are victims of this system and get adopted in to loving families that give them a huge advantage in life in terms of education and other opportunities that their parents didn't but for most, the stories are horrible.
If this practice is just completely stopped however, the wicked parents who couldn't even spare money for a condom would push these girls to the streets to sell their bodies as the burdens they think they are.
Reminds me of how my wicked step-mum put hot chilli on the genitals of one of our house helps who was some how related to my father...and my father said and did nothing...Evil women everywhere, Dear Kings be very careful of Jezebels who promise you freedom and s** capes.

ReplyDeleteI never wanted a maid . I grew up in onitsha and I saw how people treat other people's children, when you know children must act their age your children inclusive.
ReplyDeleteI employed my fellow adults as nannies for my children, I pay them mostly mothers that come and go when I am at work. I used 2 nannies till my first turned 9 , I stopped and shares chores for them, we cope. Just someone that comes twice a month to do major clean up.
Children must anger you but how these women don't use that same anger on their children when provoked makes me see this as "class issue" ( a nobody like you)

My aunt narrated the horrible experience she had while living with her elder sister. The emotional trauma is still present over 50years later. It has deeply affected relationships among their children till date. Her brother who was similarly maltreated died a horrible death. What is really the problem with Anambra women and their helps?

No child is going to come and beg me for help and I send them back to their abuser. Too many ppl know children are being abused and stay silent instead of reporting it or warning the abuser of grave consequences if they continue to be abusive.
