 The Federal Capital Territory High Court in Gudu, Abuja, on Thursday, ordered the Inspector-General of Police to pay N50m damages to the widow of the late Chief M. K. O. Abiola, Prof Zainab Abiola, for violating her fundamental rights by arresting and parading her while wearing only a nightgown. The court, in the judgment delivered by Justice Modupe Osho-Adebiyi, also ordered the police to apologise to her in two national newspapers.


The Federal Government has charged a former Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, governor, Godwin Emefiele with obtaining $6.23 million by false pretence. In the amended charge dated January 17 and filed on behalf of the Attorney-General of the Federation, AGF, by Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, Emefiele is accused of criminal breach of trust, forgery, conspiracy to obtain by false pretence and obtaining money by false pretence.

. The death toll in Tuesday’s explosion in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, has risen to five with the recovery of two more bodies on Thursday. The House of Representatives said it would probe the incident that left 77 injured and 58 houses damaged.

 More governors will today know if they will remain in office or exit as their states’ chief executives. The governors, whose fates are to be determined by the Supreme Court include- Dapo Abiodun, Ogun, Sheriff Oborevwori, Delta, Inuwa Yahaya, Gombe, Nasir Idris, Kebbi and Abdullahi Sule, Nasarawa, among others.

 The All Progressives Congress, APC, yesterday ruled out an automatic ticket for Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa ahead of the November 16, 2024 governorship poll in Ondo State. Its spokesman, Felix Morka, who spoke on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme, emphasised that there will be no preferential treatment.

 There was a heated gunfire exchange, on Thursday, as the police rescued Segun Akinyemi, an Abuja resident, who was kidnapped just as he was driving out of his house. The kidnappers were taking Akinyemi from Abuja to Kano State when the police swooped on them, according to Police Public Relations Officer in Kaduna, ASP Mansir Hassan.

Residents of 10 communities in Bungudu Local Government Area of Zamfara State have fled their homes for fear of being attacked by a notorious bandits’ leader, Dan Nagala, who earlier sent attack threats to them. It was learnt that the affected villages are Gidan Soro, Maje, Fanda Hakki, Hayin Dankaro, Doka, Dan Gamji, Galmuwar Hannu, Dan Katsina, Dakwalge and Gidan Arne.

 President Bola Tinubu, on Thursday, acknowledged that the impact of the removal of fuel subsidy was very tough on Nigerians and has affected every sector of the economy, including education, but assured that the future remained bright. Tinubu spoke at the 54th convocation ceremony of the university.

 Two yet-to-be-identified persons have been allegedly butchered to death by suspected cultists in Ota town in Ado-Odo, Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State on Wednesday. It was gathered from an eyewitness who did not want to be mentioned for fear of victimisation, that the two persons lost their lives following a cult clash in the area.
