Zobo Drink Allegedly Causes Miscarriages

Users on social media platform X are alleging that Zobo caused them Miscarriages when they were pregnant and this allegations have become some what viral....

A user asked the followers if they believe Zobo causes miscarriages

RESPONSES:
- "Zobo caused me to loose my pregnancy at 5months and since then I've not had another pregnancy... Going on 5years in my marriage now. I wish I knew about it before taking it".

-"I had the same problem during my ninth month, my baby didn't made it. Mine was Zobo and watermelon".
-
"Zobo caused me to lose my 5weeks old pregnancy, that was last year April, since then I've been trying to get pregnant. I pray I conceive this month insha'Allah.

- "OMG!!! Just hearing this now makes me remember I took zobo and I miscarried days after and I kept wondering what had caused it but my doctor said a lot of factors cause miscarriages. I haven't taken in again, since it happened March this year at 12weeks. I'm keeping my faith and hope strong in the Lord for my miracle.

-"Chai! Just crossed first trimester, took zobo 3 days ago, had mild cramps immediately. I am grateful right now that it wasn't worse, tho didn't drink much, had to stop immediately I started feeling uneasy! Thanks for sharing.

- "I didn't know I was pregnant until last week when I took zobo and vomitted the whole thing out, went to the hospital was told I was pregnant  and my body rejected it's.

- It’s not a contraceptive, it just causes uterine contractions. Many of them didn't make it themselves. Too much ginger and colourants could trigger a miscarriage and if is too sweet too.

-My husband said it cleanses the body, so they might be right as body differs. Drugs that people take and see effect immediately, some take days or long hours before it reacts on me.

- E go shock you... I drank Zobo a lot while I was pregnant and nothing do me. All home made sha. I’m surprised about what I’m reading here honestly.

-: It's not a contraceptive actually, the zobo drink helps in inducing contraction in the uterus which can lead to miscarriage. So if you are in your 1st trimester it's advisable not to drink it cause the baby is still in formation and if the uterus starts contracting as early as that time it means you lose the baby. But in 2nd and 3rd trimester you can take it, to be safe see your doctor before you do.

-: Not a contraceptive. There’s a suspicion that it has an oxytocin effect. That’s a medication used to induce labour.

-: I sell Zobo, very delicious one at that so when I'm cooking it and this my then pregnant neighbor wants some..I always decline, I told her it's bad for mothera enceinte. I always read up on all my foods..she don born now, beautiful baby boy and she buys zobo from me every week

-: Please is it okay for young ladies who are not married yet... cause Omo I love the drink likeee...

-: Yeah sure just that if you're expecting or meaning to start a family, you abstain from it for awhile.

    1. Only zobo can't cause miscarriage.
Some thing I planted few years back, used and still using it.

To me, it can only cause miscarriage when other things (herbs) are added.
If you are pregnant, make plain zobo n sugar only.

  2. i don't know about zobo causing miscarriage but i know is a good cleanser. If you take it after cooking it without adding anything it will clean your tummy wella. Please avoid it if you are pregnant till your doctor says otherwise. Remember it may not work for everyone.

  4. Thing is, a lot of those miscarriages were bound to happen, with or without Zobo.
However, when miscarriages happen (which happens wayyyy more than we openly talk about, especially in the first trimester), we tend to want to find a way to tie it to something that we did, ate, or didn't do, which are again mostly beyond our fault, it's mainly our body's way of rejecting some incompatibilities.
I mean, my first pregnancy ended in a miscarriages at almost 11 weeks and I felt like it was because I stressed myself, but then the scientist part of me knew it was very unlikely, shey I went through more stress with my second pregnancy and even worked till the day I gave birth and we turned out fine.
Same way we view most deaths as spiritual and not ordinary etc.
Some foods have been fingered to increase the chances of possible miscarriages but even with those, you need to eat a really large quantity at a sitting or over a short period of time to induce miscarriage.
I ate a good number of the fruits/foods that we Nigerians often pointed as being 'harmful' during my second pregnancy (I like doing my own extensive research rather than just following mass talk) and was fine all through, gave birth to a healthy child, done same with this current pregnancy and by God's grace I am still good.
NEVERTHELESS, if you are really paranoid or skeptical about a food/fruit causing you or your unborn baby harm or you have been advised by your doctor to avoid it, then I'd say skip it, afterall it's just food and you'll be fine without it, do you boo!

    1. You have said it all,my second pregnancy ended in miscarriage. One hour after eating watermelon I started having contractions that ended in miscarriage,so will I now say is watermelon that caused the miscarriage? I've had 2 successful pregnancies after that miscarriage and I ate watermelon each time. Some of this miscarriage are just bound to happen

    2. You have said the truth. I drank Zobo quite a number of times in my second pregnancy as that was one of the only things I could stomach without vomiting…no miscarriage. Also took a lot of peppersoup (without one or two key spices). Meanwhile in my first pregnancy where I avoided everything, I had a second trimester loss

  6. Zobo causes pre-term contractions a.k.a force labour that might lead to miscarriage...Chef T shared same story when she was pregnant about drinking zobo. This happens especially when you add ginger and pineapple...There are even certain fruits pregnant women should avoid: Pawpaw, Pineapple, Black grapes....

    1. Exactly, pineapple should be avoided during preggy.

Some people will do zobo add all manner of things but longer throat won't allow some pregnant women look in other directions.

    2. I still ate a full pineapple sometime last week, and I'm still very pregnant.
I drank so much lemon in water during my first and early second trimester because I could not drink only water without vomiting, I still dey here, plus I learnt its even a good source of vitamin C🤗, same with pawpaw, but like I said in my previous comment, make pregnant people just pick their hustle.

    3. But I was told Pineapple won't cause any harm to me or our babies during hospital visits. We keep hearing and reading different things every day.

  7. Hmmm,make I share my own.
Fourteen years ago I took in.Happiness over do me,imagine after years of waiting God finally did it.
Torr, eight weeks into pregnancy, I bought oranges, juiced two of them and drank.Note: I didn't add anything o.Thirty minutes later my stomach started rumbling with sharp pains, that's how I lost the pregnancy.

  8. Pineapple causes the cervix to open. But I thought it has to be in a substantial quantity. Body system differs though.

    1. Exactly, you need to eat plentyy in a short time.

  9. I drank zobo but as tea (hot one) during my first trimester and nothing happened. I think when you don't know the source, that's where the problem lies. Because the one you buy outside, different ingredients are being used. Eg pineapple, cloves etc

    ReplyDelete
  10. It's safe to be on a safe side if for eg we re to take statistics it's 40 percent indicator better avoid it what works for others might not work for you ,plenty women shared their experience with zobo drink and pple that said it's true are much I cannot even make that kind of mistake, avoid unripe pawpaw, pineapple
Even the color during pregy dey fear superstitious right yes that's me, my friend said after she had a miscarriage anything red color she no dey wear am be it lipstick, pant, clothe

  11. Yes Zobo can do that, my Doc Sister told me, cos I took Zobo one period and I lost so much weight, infact my stomach cleaned out so much that I complained to her, after she questioned me and I told her what I have been drinking and eating lately she told me it was the zobo, I have forgotten the word she used to describe the effect, she even told me that women who are trying to get pregnant or are pregnant ,or if you are not looking forward to loosing weight then stay away from zobo. Since then I don't take zobo much, I just do that occasionally cos I don't want to dry up like bonga fish

    1. So In addition to causing miscarriage,Zobo can help one loose weight, okay let me go and buy bag of Zobo, I don't mind looking like bonga fish,it's as if my late mum and mum in law left their fatness with me before they passed on , because I don't understand this kind fatness ,chukwu aju, I have added weight loss as my prayer request.

But when I was pregnant in 2019, I drank zobo and nothing happened

  13. 25% of all first time pregnancies will end in a miscarriage and that is a global statistic.

  14. Well but we hausa women are encouraged to take zobo, without sugar, plenty of it, though in the last trimester so that it would cleanse out the sugar in our system. We believe that the sugar in our system causes prolonged labour and if you take enogh zobo, u would piss it all out in ur urine thereby causing ease of birth on the D-day. I did it for my 2 pregnancies, and it worked for me. Tho i dnt kno if it has to do with belief system, cos i’m hausa and it is our belief and so it worked for me.

Even those saying watermelon too, i think what you believe in is what’s going to work for u. When we are pregnant, we are encouraged to eat loads of fruits, on top of that list is watermelon. Infact, in Islam it is even highly encouraged, it makes the babies very beautiful and intelligent. If you take plenty of eat sef and chew with the seeds, all that nyama nyama that comes with a new born won’t come wt urs. Ur baby would come out looking very clean. I also tried it and it perfectly worked for me.

So in all i think what you believe in is what would work for you. It’s like when i read on this blog that ppl give meaning to eating in the dream or dreaming about one’s secondary sch.
Honestly, because it isn’t part of our belief system, it has never affected me and i can confidently tell you i go weddings and places in my dream and i EAT, in fact it is every other day that i have those dreams sef. Finally, the secondary sch dream is even something i cherish because of the memories from my sch.
And i can say, so far so good. I am doing very very well in life, i don’t have to come here to state my achievements and my age.

But like i said, it depends on what one believes but we should try and be less superstitious, it would do us a lot of good. However, if it is a doctor that categorically forbids it for u, pls stay away from it.
    Remain blessed guys✌️

    2. I ate water mellow a lot during my first pregnancy, my baby came out spotless and till date has no spot, my second pregnancy i didnt as my craving change and the different is clear on both children skin.

Pineapple causes contraction and she be avoid during the first trimester so i think it is the pineapple in the zobo drink that causes the miscarriage.

    3. I also ate alot of watermelon with it's seeds,it was recommended by my Hausa friend while pregnant and my boy came out fresh and he is very intelligent.

When I got pregnant for the first time, I was always attacked in my dream, one day I ate in my dream, our belief to avoid the negativity that comes with dreaming eating, u should drink ur early morning urine, I foolishly drank mine and lost my pregnancy, I was in my early stage tho. I couldn't tell my hubby

    3. Pls which state or doctrine said if you get in the dream you ll drink your urine , my dear it's a waste it's not supposed to be ingested just like I see people putting urine if they have Apollo in their eyes ,it's not everything we should do so sorry about your loss

    4. Chai, sorry for the loss. The Hausa anonymous up there has said it all, we allow superstition to control our actions and most times it affects us negatively. May God come through for you.

  22. “Occasional anecdotal evidence has linked eating large amounts of pineapple to getting labor started. Online message boards largely attribute this to the presence of the enzyme bromelain. But there’s not a lot of scientific support for it.

Some studies have shown bromelain to cause uterine contractions in animals but only when applied directly to the uterus. Even in the animal studies, the bromelain simply caused contractions, but not labor. There was no sign that the bromelain applied in any way actually sped up the labor process. There have been no studies with pregnant people”….. my professional advice just because it caused contraction in pregnant animals is to stay away from it during the first Trimester of Pregnancy.

  23. I believe this because I drank zobo when I was already 9months pregnant and due for delivery, that night that I drank zobo, I was rushed to the hospital and gave birth in under 30minutes. The contractions ehn! It was like nothing I had ever felt with my other deliveries.
