Yesterday, I chanced upon Ruth in front of their law firm in PH City.

I replied, "Barrister Ruthie, you're the picture of health yourself! Long time no see!"
NB: to be the picture of health is an idiomatic expression which means to look very healthy.
Midway into our exchange of pleasantries, Ruth said:
"I said I'll ask you this. I know it's correct to say "Your trousers ARE nice". Why is it not "Your trousers IS nice" since it's referring to a single object?"
"Oh yeah, 'Your trousers ARE nice' is correct", I concurred.
"Since you lawyers are fond of Latin words and phrases, let ME use a Latin phrase to explain it." I said and gave her a wide toothy smile. 😀😄

WHAT'S PLURALE TANTUM?
Plurale tantum is a Latin word which means “plural only”.
It has to do with concrete nouns that function as pairs and are often used in the PLURAL FORM ONLY.
Examples include trousers, pants, scissors, spectacles, etc.
Did you notice the "s" in the examples above?
The following are other examples of plurale tantum:
👉Scissors and many other two-bladed tools like pliers, forceps, shears, tweezers, and tongs.
👉Shoes and other kinds of footwear such as sandals, flip-flops, sneakers.
👉Glasses and other kinds of eyewear such as goggles, spectacles, binoculars, etc.
👉 Trousers and other kinds of two-legged garments classified under:👇
Outer garments which include: pants (originally pantaloons), jeans,chinos, overalls, leggings, shorts, tights, slacks, breeches/britches, bloomers, dungarees, bell bottoms, trunks.
Undergarments which include: underpants, undies, long johns, boxers, panties, drawers, knickers, briefs, skivvies, tighty-whities.
PLURALE TANTUM AND CONCORD
As per concord or agreement in grammar, plurale tantum is usually treated as a plural entity.
For example 👇:

NB: His trousers WERE… ("Were" is a plural verb.)

HOW TO TURN PLURALE TANTUM INTO A SINGULAR NOUN
Plurale tantum (a "plural only" noun) can be turned into count nouns by using "a pair of" before such nouns.

4b) Where ARE my new pairs of trousers?✅ (referring to two or more)

That time my mum doesn't sleep she have sunken eye sockets,migraine ,she was restless, if she is walking she feels as if she will faint ,if you look at her then you ll know that she needs sleep thank God for the doctor
On the side if he likes a particular music buy mp3 load his favorite songs ,lower the volume and tell him to ease off he will sleep but doctor's office first he needs to sleep

Xhirled P, Good morning..I saw a comment you made under my response to you about the Anioma people in Delta state, which I will like to correct. Anioma, comprises of the whole Ibo speaking part of Delta state that make up Delta North senatorial District.
ReplyDeleteContrary to your believe, only the Asaba natives, of Oshimili south i.e the state capital, forbid eating or handling ogbono. Every other part of Anioma, relish ogbono soup. In fact their is special delicacy among the people of Ika (Agbor, Alifikede, Ekwuoma etc) and Aniocha (Enu ani) called Ofe Ujuju. Aside from the Ujuju leaves, Ogbono is the main ingredient. So my dear, it's only Asaba people that forbid ogbono, not the whole Anioma.
