CHRONICLE OF A MARRIED MAN

Walking on my street sometime last week, I saw on the walls of some houses, these fake job adverts which read thus "Job in milk factory, 3000 per day. Call 080blahblahblah". It brought back memories from my younger years, job searching in the streets of Lagos. Most of us must have experienced fake job peddlers one time or the other in our adult lives. Below is one of my experiences.

I had about three friends in my circle who were job seekers like me, we would forward vacancies to ourselves, encourage and support ourselves. One day, I recieved a message from one of them, it was a vacancy with an email address included. I quickly called him and asked him who gave him, he said a former classmate of his sent it to him, that I should try it.

I sent my CV and a message was sent inviting me for an interview. The interview was slated for the following day. I was wondering bwhich company will send out messages inviting people for interview the next day. What if the person was not in town? What if he or she has to go hustle on a construction site for one day in order to raise money for transportation and the rest? That was the first red flag but I ignored.

The next day, I ironed my trousers, shirt and coat, knack the Italian shoes that my uncle dashed me, sprayed my *Balilah" perfume and left home for the interview.

I got there 30mins before the time and met about 20 other people waiting outside the gate. At the stated time, we were about 50 outside the gate. Then they opened it for us and ushered us inside a hall.

We sat down and wrote our names/phone numbers on a book that was passed round, waiting for them to start calling us inside an office one by one like a normal interview.

Suddenly I heard a sound, it was from the television in front of us. In my mind, they were not as bad as I thought after they locked us outside the gate like people seeking factory job in a manufacturing company in Mishin Lagos. They want to entertain us with music or movie on television while we wait.

My people, to my shock, it was a man that started talking on TV , telling us about how e need to take care of our health and advertising a foreign company that sells herbal drugs, the company's name forev..... livi..pro...

I was confused but was determined to see the end. After 30mins or so, one woman n suit came and addressed us. She told us how their company produces millionaires, how they travelled on all expense paid trips to abroad for vacation. After she was done, a man came and talked his own. By now, the number of applicants had reduced to less than 30.

Six hours later, we were still receiving lectures. Huger started biting me. it I was determined to see their end, we were less than 20people left in the hall at this time..
Not long after, the speaker dropped the bombshell. He said we would have to buy their products and sell them and also bring referrals. He said we would have to drop 5k each and we would be given products worth 30000. I stood up and headed for the door. That was when I noticed that they had a bouncer at the entrance. He asked me where I was going to, I told him I wanted to buy snacks outside the gate as I was very hungry. That was how I ran.

  2. Hahahaha, I have been to the same lecture by the same company you mentioned above some years ago this was at Aromire at Ikeja, I didn't wait till the end because I do not have flair for marketing. I actually like their products.

    2. 14:04 that’s not the topic of discussion. Why give out fake impression like as though it was an actual job, the type needed by the applicant. Why not specify it’s a marketing job?

  5. These companies falsely marketing herbal products that claim to solve practically every ailment. I shake my head at how they subject young men and women to hardship. They sell them lies and push them to do everything to sell. All for peanuts. I see them close to where I live. I see how they supposedly give motivational talks to these deluded young men and women to get them to market.

Ofcourse, everyone must put in effort for success. But anything that involves refferal, multi-level marketing and what not, fails eventually.

    1. You gerrit dear! 2nd Pedro precisely. Immediately after my SSCE, I applied and was called. Off I went to 2nd Pedro/UPS with my younger brother. I located the address and called the telephone number on the flyer (we were in constant communication that day because he was giving us directions.) He was giving me a description of his outfit. Dude was practically in front me. Immediately he turned around, I saw his eyes (red will be putting it mildly.) He asked me (still on the phone with me) if I was the one, I said no immediately. Ended the call and ran with my brother. God forbid bad thing! Dude kept calling but I didn’t pick o.

I can relate. Mine was at Onipanu bus stop, in Lagos. They locked us outside and then we entered the hall and lectures started. No refreshments, no water sef. Hunger almost removed my eyes before I ran away. Your own were even considerate with their 5000, the one I attended said we should pay 38k plus in order to get products for sale.
Imagine advertising for Admin officers,Hr officers, customer Care reps, Receptionist, Managers, accountants , etc only to tell them to come and hawk health products after wasting their time and money. Some even came from other states to attend the "interview"

  10. Na wah o, I remember sometimes in 2017 when I just started this my current job, the job was very stressful and demanding, threatening with a very low salary, though till now but a little stressless, I saw one stupid advert like that with a mouth watering salary and a phone number to call.
I decided to call the number and they told me to come the next day, I was glad and very hopeful that I would be employed, I started calculating my salary and tips and how I would spend the money, because according to them, it's a club work as waitress.
When I reached there, I saw a multitude of crowd like holy ghost congress people at redemption camp, soon the lady that directed me to come there attended to me and was giving me sermon on the mount that salary earners are poor and can never be rich like Otedola, Adenuga, Dangote etc, she was wasting my time despite telling her that I needed to resume work that afternoon, later after the long sermon, she told me I would be hawking one stupid herbal products that if I make enough sales, they will send me abroad.
    To be continued...

  12. All this while, I was boiling with anger, she said I should go and listen to people's testimonies and I would be convinced, I entered a hall inside the place, the hall was full to the brim apart from the multitude of crowd outside, some poverty looking people were testifying how they rose from grass to grace after selling the stupid herbal products and have exotic cars, traveling outside the country as they like, I was just angry with myself, the last straw was when one young lady that look haggard, hungry, tattered, and washed away in an outdated tattered worn-out lace that I couldn't wear again and had to burn, started giving testimonies that she has four cars, two houses and always go for vacation in America after selling their herbal products, then I knew that I had to stand up and leave for my sanity.
That day , I had to manage the little money on me for transportation from Lekki to Oshodi to and fro,I was very hungry and thirsty, angry with myself and my life that day, I cried hen, I even made a a mistake at work, since that day, I don't read any f**lish advert concerning work pasted on the walls and I don't collect any handbill pertaining to work.

  13. Imagine telling people about making millions and you can't even afford to buy them lunch.

I keep asking these MLM crooks that if your products are so good, why not have them on shelves or sell from authorised stores online? Why must I buy your special products to store in my garage? What are you interested in: sales or recruitment? Is it a cult?

Also, is there a market of people in the slums of Nigeria who are keeping money away every month to buy multivitamins? Because even in my line of work, telling a Nigerian to spend 300 Naira on their own health in the form of 100mg vitamin C is a problem for them. There is a very limited number of people in Nigeria who spend as little as 50k monthly on supplementing their health so what happens to the products in my garage with no buyer?

The people who sign up are at a whole different level of wickedness where they are happy to recruit others into a cult to deplete their meager wages for a small cut.

Read up on Amway and other MLMs. It's all about preying on the poor to keep those at the very top of the pyramid scheme rich and they are not even as rich as those running legitimate businesses.

To get rich, avoid paying stupid tax. Learn from the mistakes of others.

Thanks for sharing your experience, brother.

  18. Laughter will not allow me to drink water without making a mess. A Bouncer at a job interview, my goodness, is it by force to accept their offer. The things job seekers see and experience during job search. May God grant every job seeker a respectable job.

  19. These MLM schemes thrive with these tales of getting rich which are all lies, those at the "so called top" have other things that give them money but they'll spin it like they got rich from the scheme.

MMM was the 3rd time I lost money in a network marketing scheme, since then, I tied my wrapper and faced front. I'll rather sow that money into the life of a struggling person around me and let God bless me for it.

  21. My own experiences bad past, your own they even talked about products at first is good. them no mention anything. These people are trained to persuade you it's after your first payment, they have POS for transfer so that you would not change your mind when you step out. You don't communicate with each other.
