Pastor Jimmy Odukoya Responds To Backlash On His Dreadlocks

Pastor Jimmy Odukoya, actor and head pastor of the Fountain of Life Church Ilupeju, has responded to the criticisms about his physical appearance.

During a recent interview with BBC Pidgin, he noted that his appearance has nothing to do with his calling as a minister. He went on to stress that everything he does has a spiritual backing to it and nothing is done on a whim.

Odukoya said, "God called me the way I am, just as I am. As for my dreads, the story behind it is long but the thing is everything I do is backed up by scriptures. If you tell me something, I'd tell you 'Let's check the scriptures'. If someone says that long hair is wrong, I'd tell you to check the Bible where the Lord told Samson not to cut his hair."

Speaking about his facial hair, he backed up his appearance by stressing that Jesus himself had a beard which was pulled when he was being crucified, therefore his beard cannot possibly be sinful.

He said, "When people say, 'Oh he's a pastor and he has a beard,' remember the Bible said that when Jesus was tortured his beard was pulled from his face. If he didn't have a beard, what hair did they pull from his face, was it fresh skin?"

Odukoya charged people to distinguish personal preferences and opinions from 'sin' because they are not always mutually exclusive.
"Personal opinion is different from sin, If you like short hair or long hair no problem, but if you tell me that I can't have long hair because, 'It's a sin,' my brother that's where we won't agree," he said

    2. That's how some will focus on other people's outward looks, criticise those who are doing what God called them to do nonstop and miss their own callings. Focus on your salvation and let others fulfill their callings. #letpjbreef

  2. My own opinion is for people to know God themselves.
Most churches are now business centers.

    1. Hmmm what about the tattoo,
No Bible verse to support that?
The reason you gave for wearing ear rings is the same reason some churches give for not wearing it

    2. All of these people just select what suit them and then make people accept it kai lol..

  3. Everybody to your tent, who am I to judge? He without sin should cast the first stone. All the best to him and his calling

  4. Hmmm. Solid points. But remember the Bible also says, about causing another to stumble. If your looks become a distraction that can cause weaker Christians to stumble, then you will be held accountable.

In all, the wisdom of God is profitable to direct.

    1. 10:21 but this your point is for the likes of those who expose their private body parts which could lead a person to commit the sin of sexual immorality, people who tell kids to lie against an innocent person etc. I don't see why the way I make my hair can lead someone to commit sin.

    2. @slim shaddy you are talking about just one aspect. Any action that will cause others to stumble will be judged.

      Delete
    3. No it’s not any aspect
Paul was talking about eating sacrifices

      Delete
    4. No, I didn't talk about one aspect. I said "the likes" I can't mention them all , I mentioned two up there and there are lots of other things that we can do that causes others to sin ; but I don't seem to get why one's hairstyle can lead another person to sin

  5. There is one part you no mention...The aspect of ''Tantu'' on your body because the book of Levictus speaks on that aspect of body scarification and marks. What do you say about that?

Anyhoo, all I know is God qualifies the called, he does not call the qualified...I wish you well in carrying on with the Lord's work...Amen!!

    2. As long as he yields himself to God in humility and allows himself to be lead by the Holy Spirit, he is good to go. What anon 10:21 said is very important. All things are lawful but not all things are expedient.

    3. So by this reasoning, Akindayomi could not have been serving God since he had tribal marks. Colonised minds will be fine. Jews today, Christians tomorrow. Eating crayfish and hating on tattoos.

  6. I sincerely feel if he had a choice, he wouldn't want to be the head pastor; but live his life freely acting his movies et al. But when God calls, you have to obey.
I also feel it isn't an inheritance thing as most will speculate but an agreement from the board of trustees of the church and offcourse, God's ordination.
It is a huge responsibility Pastor Jimmy and I pray that the grace of God be multiplied to you daily so you can meet the father's (God) expectation and lead the people in the way of righteousness and truth.

What he needs from us all is prayers and not castigation or judgement. We all are standing by God's grace and mercy

    1. I think it'll be dishonest to say his position has nothing to do with inheritance. Even if a decision of the church board of trustees, they know who's son he is and what he represents...

I don't see his looks as sinful, it's mostly a Nigerian culture thing, even the cops in Nigeria stereotype
people based on that. He's an actor/artist and it's common for them to seek art forms of expression. As for dreads, that's a texture of afro, our natural hair but of course, human hair straight wigs and weaves are more celebrated and welcome in a black nation than afro in it's forms and textures. I agree that he needs all the prayers cos knowing Nigerians, they will judge him to death. Outward appearance matters a lot to Nigerians than anything you have inside of you😆. I wish him well

  9. Dear pastor Jimmy, if you ever read this. 1st of all, congratulations on being chosen to pastor. I pray that the Lord gives you the strength, wisdom, courage and all that is needed for this job.

To the issue of your looks, I have to side with the people calling on you to change it. Not because it's a sin but because of where you find yourself. Take a cue from Joseph in the bible Gen 41:14. Even as a Hebrew, he shaved before meeting Pharaoh. Why? Because he knew that's a sign of respect in Egypt.
If the people you are pastoring do not believe that their pastor should have a certain looks then please take the attention off you. Your job is to lead people to Christ so do not let your appearance hinder a soul from listening to you. Will you changing your looks be a sin? If no then please do that.
Remember Jesus said give what belongs to Ceasor to Ceasor and what belongs to God to God?
May the Lord be with you and may he open up the spirit of your understanding. Shallom

I wonder why people wear that dirty looking thing. I've only seen 1 out of a 100 who looked good in dreads. You don't know how unattractive it makes you look. Bv Paris even confirmed it that when she cut it off, her real beauty shone for all to see.

Go to the barbershop today and scrap that thing off!!!

  12. Pastor Jimmy you need to make certain readjustments when their is a call to higher service. Remember:
1 Corinthians 10:23 Amplified Bible (AMP)
"All things are lawful [that is, morally legitimate, permissible], but not all things are beneficial or advantageous. All things are lawful, but not all things are constructive [to character] and edifying [to spiritual life]".

    2. humans are not the holy spirit, so i believe if God tells him to he will....as for now he is fine with it so people should back off...every body judging yet their lives are full of sin they are yet to repent from..all the things they are making noise about does not matter to God..if you heard he stole, committing fornication or stuff like that then speak out

  13. My own be sey, las las, na GenZ Baddies go full d church bcoz mummies & daddies will eventually port to other churches. I don’t think his father prepared him ahead of eventuality, d way Papa Oyedepo did bcoz as we speak, Papa’s sons are visibly active in d church ,d first son is d resident pastor of Living Faith Ota , they are fire brands in ministrations & represent their father anywhere in d world , at any point in time. U need to hear them preach, well spoken, articulate & at home with d word (Bible). I doubt if Pastor Jimmy went that far b4 his father’s demise , otherwise, he wouldn’t have been an actor. All d best to him.

    1. Whenever asked who to succeed him, his father always said the church is not his but God. That when the time comes, God will choose the best for the church.
So he allowed the guy pursue his dreams, because he didn't run the church as family business but the house of God.
Now God has picked Jimmy who was pursuing other dreams. So I trust God to help and groom him.
Btw, this is not my church ooo

And it is even best that he has tested life. He will know better, the difference between living for the world and living for God when he fully surenders to God. It is someone with experience on both sides that can advise you better on how to overcome certain things.

  16. If he says the hair has spiritual backing then he is what mostly those that worship with cherubim and seraphim call 'Nazareth' it may not be your regular dreadlocks. The call it 'dada' He is a Nazareth my people , there is nothing you can do about that until when it's due to be cut off. They don't just cut off the hair like that else something very bad will happen to him

    1. It's Nazarene not Nazareth.

    2. He wasn’t born dada. It’s a style young people and entertainers go for now. Nothing wrong with that. And if he chooses to cut it, please nothing bad will happen to him. At the end of the day it’s his choice. If people don’t like it they have the choice to worship somewhere else. I pray God strengthens him because it’s a huge responsibility to take on a large church

      Delete
    3. Ok, Nazarene. Thank you

      Delete
    4. Dada can start at any age o. Oh you don't know. A woman I know, her's started when she had finished giving birth. She carried it for 12yrs until she was led my 'the spirit' to cut it off. Very lengthy, up to her butt.

  17. In as much as I don't like dreads that much, I believe your heart is what matters to God. Someone might shave his hair and beards and not be God-fearing. When you fellowship with the Holy Spirit daily, he will teach you the right things and give you an understanding of God's word. It's about one's heart for God. First of all, I want to acknowledge him for taking the bold step to spread the gospel. He would have declined, but he did not. God will continue to strengthen him and give him more grace in Jesus name. Amen.
