News Update

The two-day meeting between the Federal Government and the organised labour ended in a deadlock on Tuesday, with the Nigerian Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress leaders vowing to begin a nationwide protest against the removal of fuel subsidy.


 The Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal has reserved judgment on the petition which Peter Obi, Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party (LP), filed to challenge the victory of President Bola Tinubu in the February 25 election. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Tinubu winner of the election but Obi rejected the outcome and headed for the tribunal.

 An aircraft on Monday evening, crashed into a building in Ikeja, Lagos State capital. The aircraft burst into flames near the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA. Emergency operatives from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) rescued passengers on board.

 Staff of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) picketed the head office of the commission in Abuja on Tuesday. Wielding placards and chanting different songs, the workers demanded payment of seven months’ salaries.

 The acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun on Tuesday warned against violent protests. He ordered police commissioners to beef up security. This is coming as the Nigerian Labour Congress vowed to begin its nationwide protest on Wednesday.

 Former Kaduna Governor, Nasir el-Rufai on Tuesday threw the Senate into a quagmire when the mode of screening him for his ministerial nomination became an issue. While Senators from his Kaduna State requested for the continuation of the norm, that being a former Governor, he is supposed to introduce himself then take a bow and go, some other senators felt the former Governor should be quizzed about his capacity to serve as Minister.

 The two-week sit-at-home order issued by Simon Ekpa has suffered a setback. Residents of Southeast states shunned the order and attended to their daily schedules on Tuesday. In Imo State, business owners in the Owerri metropolis, according to reports, opened to customers. Banks, markets, supermarkets, restaurants and artisans operated unhindered across the region.

 President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC), on Tuesday, insisted that the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, not being a member of the party lacks the legal right to challenge the outcome of the February 25 election. They equally urged the PEPC to bar him from re-contesting if the election is eventually annulled.

The Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP) has dismissed President Tinubu’s Monday broadcast as a litany of false promises hurriedly put together by his handlers. The National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, at a press briefing, on Tuesday, claimed the promises were aimed at hoodwinking and beguiling Nigerians and blackmailing the organised labour.

 Three suspects were on Tuesday paraded at the Osun State Police Command’s headquarters over an alleged attack on a Celestial Church located in Odu Village near Osogbo. The suspects allegedly attacked the church during a vigil in the early hours of Tuesday.
