This was made known in a statement by the National President of AGN, Prince Emeka Rollas.
According to him, the guild had been closely monitoring Williams and believe it is necessary to suspend him.
The statement reads, “The Guild has been monitoring his involvement in illicit substances since December last year until it reached a point where it got out of hand. Considering the current circumstances, he cannot be allowed to associate with other performers on set due to the danger it poses.”
“He should have been suspended earlier, but we decided to give him a chance to undergo minor treatments, which he has repeatedly failed to comply with. However, at this point, Jerry is not only a risk to himself but also to other actors who might act alongside him on set.”
“Therefore, we have made the decision to suspend him indefinitely until he receives a clean bill of health from a medical practitioner or a professional specializing in drug abuse."

ReplyDeleteIn as much as I don’t support what he was accused of, in my opinion I believe it is wrong to announce publicly why he was suspended. A public announcement for suspension and a disclaimer for anyone doing business with him would have been enough. It is easier to get addicted that to stop. Rehabilitation and staying sober is a long process that needs a lot of love and support. The internet does not forget. This is a young man who has a long way ahead of him. How do you want him to feel? How do you want him to heal? Even after healing, how do you want the public to view him? It is just like publicly announcing the health status of an individual just to warn others. There are times we take caution. With this announcement, people will stigmatize him, curse and hate him. If he is not strong what will happen? Suicidal ideation or hide more into substance abuse. I know you have policies and protocols guiding the guild, but do you have medical experts or human rights professionals who advice you on cases like this? This is my thought. I am not supporting what he did, not criticizing the punishment, but I am criticizing the approach. A simple notice of ‘The guild is suspending Mr. Jerry Williams for activities that are viewed to be dangerous to himself and people around and the guild is hereby warning the public that anybody acting with him is not being protected under Nollywood’ Addiction is like when you are thirsty or hungry, until you drink or eat, you will feel restless. If he is a confirmed addict, he is no longer in control of himself, he needs help, care, discipline, and love not public humiliation.

There is nothing like 'you people' How will you feel, if your company make a public announcement that you are HIV positive knowing that it is transmissible? Addiction is a mental problem. It is a long process. They relapse easily and this public announcement is not discipline but humiliation.
