Some Nigerian Employees Shared Their Resignation Stories
-The one that ended in hot tears.
“I asked my last boss for a raise to which she declined. The following month, I got an offer from a different company offering to pay me what I had requested from that boss. I took it and explained my situation to her while turning in my resignation letter because I thought she’d understand seeing as we have similar experiences.
I was wrong. She started to shout at me and for the remainder of my two weeks, she also gave me the workload of 5 people to do before leaving saying I had betrayed her. She would ignore my greetings and also snap at me. I cried every day until I eventually left the company. The day I left was the best day of my life.“
********
The one that became a police case.
“My last boss was wild. As soon as I put in my quit notice, he told me that my contract stated that I couldn’t go over to the company I was switching to. I was so lost because I didn’t even read the contract as I was just happy to stop being unemployed when I got that role at his company. At the end of the day, he called his policemen and I called my own policemen.“
********
Wow. Payback?
“My last company ehn, I have never seen people as petty as them before in my life. As I told them I was no longer doing like this, they fired me on the spot. I was just like “petty.” I chested my L and moved on sha.”
-We no go gree oh, we no go gree.
“Leaving my last employer was the hardest thing I have had to do because my oga likes me a lot. For me, it was no longer a 9-5 to me but more like a family business. I had to go back to school but my boss kept on begging me not to leave completely; to work weekends or in the evenings. At some point, my mum was involved in the whole thing. To be honest, I was just tired of the back and forth and I wanted fresh air.”

Wiun!
“Me that I relocated abroad and didn’t tell my family or work people. It’s not me that evil eye will catch. I heard that in the workgroup, they still always ask what happened to me. Me that I have escaped.“

Hmm…
“There was this guy that worked in my company that we put in charge of strategic partnerships with potential investors. That’s how one day he told us that he was thinking of trying a new field and he had to leave. Follow your passion and all that. We did a farewell party and even cried for him as per one of the boys.
The next week, he resumed at the company of one of our biggest rivals as head of operations. We all wanted to die. Since then, everyone at work signs a non-disclosure agreement form. Ole ni everybody.”

ReplyDeleteChoi,!! Wickedness.
DeleteSome Bosses are terrible sha, some are are nice!!!! When I left my last Job, my Boss organized a farewell party for me, prayed for me and even gave me cash. She practically family
ReplyDeleteBad bosses are God's gift. They are the only motivation you need to strive on your own. If not for their insults, the lion in you may not be woken and you will die an impoverished employee.
ReplyDeleteBad bosses are the DEVIL'S EXCRETA.
DeleteWhat stupid motivation are you talking about? Uou need insults and intimidation to be motivated???
Stop using empty woetry to minimize the extreme toxicity and work place trauma that people are currently facing and people who have left such environments for years are still struggling to heal from.
Afi lion and jungu kini kan kini kan ...nonsense.
Let's just say I have vowed never to work in a one man's business that is not structured. To pay salary, wahala. When you want to leave,it's another problem
ReplyDeleteI had one boss that called me to resume work immediately after the outgoing MD resigned. The Md was like a shoulder to lean on as I was going through all sorts of attack from work. I had to just find a way to move to the lagos branch. As soon as the Md resigned na so mama called me o i must return back to the Hq blah blah. As I returned they said she had gone out and would soon be back, I couldn't wait for long. I just dropped my resignation letter for her secretary bfr they kill my enemy because of pure water business.
ReplyDeleteI used to be so calm and quiet even if you step on my toes, I just apologize to you and move.
ReplyDeleteSo it happened that my manager just discovered that I know about all her fraudulent deals in the company. She wanted to get me involved so I won't report her but I didn't oblige her request. I became an enemy immediately even though I didn't report her or get on her way.
Knowing that I'm a calm person who'd let you have your way while I move with my life, she accused me of fraud with forged evidence though a very small money.
She knows my boss hates fraud even the tiniest of it. My boss likes me so much so he was so disappointed. Ordinarily, he would sack me but he gave me 2 weeks suspension.
I was pained that my boss didn't even hear me out before the punishment and he said that he now believed what my manager said that quiet people always have an ulterior motive which is always bad. So I went in and wrote my resignation letter out of so much pain, bitterness and tears. My manager saw me and was just mocking me. She said I was lucky that her plan was to get me sacked but we live to try another day.
She did what she did believing that I had no evidence to nail her. Boy! was she was so wrong.
After writing my letter, I piled up the heap of evidence which was more than a full 80 leaves long note and those were just the ones I could lay my hands on at that moment. I pleaded with my boss to hear me out for just 5 minutes as it was a very important information I wanted to give him which he reluctantly allowed me.
When he started seeing his forged signatures, letterhead and stamp flying everywhere and the only person who had access to them was the manager, man was speechless.
She was busy dancing around in the office and planning a way to permanently get me off and my boss' police escorts came to usher her into my boss' office.
She believed it was still about me but the table turned quite fast.
She turned deaf and dumb immediately, she couldn't believe the level of evidence she beheld. In fact she didn't believe I know to that extent no to talk about having any physical evidence. They were so true to be forged and too many to say the least.
She was dismissed immediately and the police took her to pack her things. I felt bad cos she's the breadwinner in her marriage but hey...
While my boss was still getting on with that my suspension still stands for knowing and didn't report and that I should do better when I come back, I quickly handed in my resignation. He said he's no accepting as I was doing it out of anger, I said okay.
It was about 8 days to payday and I received my salary and got a call to resume the next day but I told them that I'd left town and don't know when I would be returning.
They kept the call for like 2 months, he wasnt returning and he moved on. Happened since 2012 but we still have a friendly relationship till date.
Good for her
DeleteI had been working for this particular boss of mine for close to three years with no review in salary. Whenever I asked for a review, he'd always tell me to hold on, and during the interview stage he said salaries would be reviewed in 6 months time.
ReplyDeleteOne day, he complained to me that his children were not catching up at school and I volunteered to tutor them after school hours. That year I was charging 25/30k per child for 3 days a week, but because he was my boss, I charged him 10k per child and was teaching them daily including Saturdays.
At the third year, I walked up to him again and told him I felt it was time to review my salary. He looked me in my face and said he didn't think I needed a salary increment and the only increment he would review was the lesson fee as the children had picked up massively in school.
I was pained because this was the man I was writing tenders for, this was the man that made heavy profit since my arrival at his company and at my employment there realized his former employees were stealing from him.
It was the audacity for me and I started to plan my exit. Since it was mid-month, I knew resigning at that time won't get me my salary. So, I waited until the beginning of the next month when I got the alert and sent him my resignation via text message.
I sent an SMS because he told me he didn't give me an employment letter and I had no proof of my work there. He was pained when I left and was telling all and sundry that I won't get another job as jobs were hard to come by in Nigeria. He even sent me a stinker on employers-employee relationship on WhatsApp. At this point, my cup of care was empty, so when I saw the heading, I didn't bother reading.
Friends and family felt my decision was too drastic and jobs were difficult to come by. Funny enough, that year, I was the one making choices of which job best suited me. Know your worth, don't let any employer trample on your right with the excuse that there are no jobs in Nigeria especially if you're working for a one man business!
I love what you did to your selfish employer. Please can you share exactly the subjects you taught them?
DeleteI was teaching them English, maths, VR, QR and other subjects they had issues with or homework but I made an exception for exams and teach them all the subjects during exams.
DeleteI am planning to leave next to go back to school. I don't know how my Oga will feel but I know it won't be funny for them. Let me start preparing ahead for all the manipulation strategies they will employ. Definitely I won't agree to combine it, it won't work for their personality.
ReplyDeleteOne man Job takes the Grace of God to continue.
Na today I get time read this post. Stella tankio! I am blessed!
