NEW COLUMN ALERT

CHRONICLE OF A MARRIED MAN

Before marriage, one of the things intending couples should discuss is relatives visit to their homes. Who among them can visit? how long can they stay and under what condition? etc. From the stories we hear, this issue causes rancour in marriages and should be taken seriously.

Well, we didn't discuss this unfortunately, but we found a way around it.
What we do is that anytime anyone wants to visit, we discuss it. If we are not financially balanced, we tactically stop the person from coming, including our parents and siblings. If the visit is unnecessary, we dodge it too.

If we are good to host a visitor, we plan ahead on what we would cook during the person's visit and stock the house. No special meals that would stretch our pockets, just our normal meals. The only exception is if the person is on a special diet like one of our parents who is diabetic.
I did eye service concerning feeding when we had our first child, as per an excited first time dad and capable in-law. Lol. It affected me financially and I couldn't settle my mum in-law properly when she was leaving.

The most important part of this discussion is the duration of the visit. If it is just to come and greet us and you are a relative, you don't exceed two weeks, the only exception is if the person is sick and needs to be treated and also needs enough rest before leaving.

For friends coming to greet, it was one week max. We will stylishly send you away after that.
These days of economic meltdown on our side, we have suspended all incoming and outgoing visits, country is hard.
I'm lucky my wife cooperates, she even gives me tips.

I dont like people staying in my house, I dont like my privacy to be invaded at all....I have an apartment i use as my office and thats where my family from Nigeria stay when they visit, I stock it with food and thats it. If friends come, i put them in hotels and we hang out.......

Trust No One
pardon me in advance because it's gonna be a long read
There is this old woman who is my regular customer, and at times she can call my line and ask me to bring her cash and also come along with my POS machine. She has two children, both married(one dey London the other dey Eko ile). She also has one young guy around her house which she took as omo adugbo(say Tolu). You know all these old people who loves to have anyone at their beck and call whenever they need help and this woman trusted this guy so much.

I think this guy has been tampering with Mama's account and withdrawing money for his personal use but because mama is ok and not only that, she can't start stressing herself to bank, so, each time a particular amount is deducted from her account, she will just call Tolu to tell him and explain, Tolu will always, mummy, ma ba yin mail awon bank ye (meaning, I will mail the banks for you and they will rectify it) unknowing to mama that Tolu was the one using her details to purchase things online because he knows her children do send in money and whenever they send, mama will call him to come help her confirm the money sent, so he has all info.

On Friday, mama called me and asked me to see her and bring her 10k which I told her if she can hold on till 12pm and she said no problem. Exactly 12pm I left my stand because that's the actual time I leave to go home and eat or shower at times whenever I feel heat and during 12-2pm, sales dey always dry. I got to her place and gave her the cash and she asked me to use her ATM but there was an insufficient balance, mama was surprised and said, she should still have over 100k in the account then I decided to check her balance for her but my people, mama only has #1800 in her account. I asked her how she got to know her account balance and she explained to me that her son sent her 50k some days back and she has 50k in the account even after about 20k was missing in her account which tolu has mailed them.

I smiled and and asked if she can speak to any bank staff if I help her call because she uses Access bank and she said "ose omo mi" I logged into my bank app and picked my account officer's line, I called severally before she picked up then I explained myself and told her I'm calling on behalf of my customer and she is an old woman(after telling her everything mama told me and I also lied to her that mama is hungry now but no money in her account) After everything shaa, I gave the phone to mama, she asked her several questions and she was satisfied then she asked mama to give me the phone(Note: my account officer has been someone have been talking to not once not twice so we talk most times when I have issues with transactions).

She explained to me and gave me date when mama received the last 50k from the said son bearing the same surname and also said that, a lot of transactions has gone in her account. I was pestering her but she refused to give me details then mama asked me to give her the phone and I had to put the call on speaker.

 She said her account was used to make purchases on different online sales services but she cant compromise the bank ethics. if we need any further info, we should visit their nearest branch then we ended the call. I bluntly told mama that, the guy is the one who is doing those things but mama no believe then she called him , when the guy came, she asked the guy to show me the mail he said he sent to banks for complains, baba was stammering and later said his phone was blablabla, you know how criminal change words.

I asked him to give me his phone and said it to his face, that he is the one tampering with Mama's account but he shouted and began to make noise, his noise caught the attention of Mama's neighbor(tenant) and he came in, immediately I told the man to come in and lock the door, I moved closer to him and the neighbor asked me what happened, I explained briefly, infact, mama has began to curse the guy in tears(this guy shouldn't be more than 21-23).

 Then the neighbor asked him to obey me if he has nothing hidden and he said "if I don't find anything, egbon, this case no go settle oo", I laugh ehn because he doesn't know my instinct is always right. He gave me his phone and I asked him to unlock all apps, that was when he began to shake, I checked all received messages, oh my God, a lot of messages from Ali express then I clicked on the AliExpress app on his phone, my people, you know when you are a regular customer to online sales app, your frequently used card details will be stored except from the 3digit at the back. I asked mama to give me back her ATM card to check and compare from the few digit shown on AliExpress, it was the same, immediately he noticed we have caught him, he knelt down and began to beg mama, I asked him how does he generate OTP then he said each time he wants to purchase anything online he comes to mama house because mama is always giving him her phone, so once the OTP is sent, he will make use of it and delete immediately.

My people, hmm, mama called her daughter and explained everything right there and she asked if I can help arrest him but I said no, for reason best known to me, that I just wanted to make mama understand that, someone she trusted is the one tampering with her account. I gave mama the money I brought and the daughter transferred with charges to me late night on Saturday but on my way back from church on Sunday, I went to Mama's place to know what she later did and she said the guy's mother promised to pay back the money before middle of April and pleaded that she shouldn't inform the police.

 I advised her to look for a way to go to the bank and request for another ATM but she said no that whenever her children want to send money, they will send to me and I will help her bring cash.
Trust no one with your bank details let alone your ATM card, people are not what you think they are. Some people are looking for an opportunity to rip you off your sweat. Stop having an automatic log in for any of your bank app or transaction, it's bad, what if you misplaced your phone? stop accepting automatic "Account log in" whenever it pops up, it's not safe at all.
Lastly, make sure your bank alert sim is not always in the same phone you have your bank app, your eyes go clear if you no see your phone on Friday night and Saturday, Sunday kan be weekend, this is an era where it's so difficult blocking your bank transactions because of network issues facing the banking industries now.

The old woman is so lucky that the guy did not kill her cos of the money.... The new arrangement is good, nah you gai inside...
