Study Links Hair Straigthening Products To Uterine Cancer Risk

Hair-straightening products may significantly increase the risk of developing uterine cancer among those who use them frequently, a large study published on Monday suggests.

''We estimated that 1.64% of women who never used hair straighteners would go on to develop uterine cancer by the age of 70, but for frequent users, that risk goes up to 4.05%," study leader Alexandra White of the U.S. National Institute of Environmental Health Safety (NIEHS) said in a statement.

"However, it is important to put this information into context. Uterine cancer is a relatively rare type of cancer," she added.

Still, uterine cancer is the most common gynecologic cancer in the United States, according to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), with rates rising, particularly among Black women.

Researchers tracked 33,947 racially diverse women, ages 35 to 74, for an average of nearly 11 years. During that time, 378 women developed uterine cancer.

After accounting for participants' other risk factors, the odds of developing uterine cancer were more than two and a half times higher for women who had used straightening products more than four times in the previous year.

Less frequent straightener use in the past year also was associated with an elevated uterine cancer risk, but the difference was not statistically significant, meaning it might have been due to chance.

Earlier studies have shown that hair straighteners contain so-called endocrine disrupting chemicals. The products have previously been associated with higher risks of breast and ovarian cancer.

"These findings are the first epidemiologic evidence of association between use of straightening products and uterine cancer," White and colleagues wrote in The Journal of the National Cancer Institute. "More research is warranted to ... identify specific chemicals driving this observed association."

The link between straightener use and uterine cancer did not differ by race in the study.

But "because Black women use hair straightening or relaxer products more frequently and tend to initiate use at earlier ages than other races and ethnicities, these findings may be even more relevant for them," Che-Jung Chang of NIEHS said in a statement.

Did you actually read the post or just saw the headline and galloped with your 2 left legs to drop your comment?

  4. The research is not far from the truth. i was using relaxer 6-8 times per year on my hair and before u know it i was diagnosed of multiple uterine fibroids thank God mine didn't stop me from conception and delivery. I did some research on relaxer on my own and this made me reduced the no of times i relax my hair. Now in a year i only retouch like twice or at most thrice that's all. if the hair becomes due and start paining me i will just apply hair moisturizer and matt it.. To God be the glory after reducing the usage of relaxer drastically i went for another scan this year and the multiple uterine fibroid has dissappeard. Now I've made up my mind to completely go natural self for myself,my nanny and daughter no more relaxer. That sh,,**t is doing more harm than good.

    1. 6 to 8 times a year 😳😳😳 that is way too much no matter how strong your hair is.

    2. When i had relaxed hair, was retouching 2x a year. If your hair is due,do deep conditioning and then braid, especially kinky.

  5. I relax my hair two times a year, if I had a slight soft hair, I would have gone natural. May God help us

    1. I had strong hair, no relaxer even kits that can soften it.
I went natural 8 years ago was managing the strong brown strands until 2 years ago I found out the problem.
Many strong hairs like that are low porosity, get a strand of your hair put it in a clean bowl of water, you will find out it will not sink.
Look for ways of caring for low porosity hair type, and you will get a softer, fuller, longer and darker hair in no time,.

    2. My hair is low porosity. It can sit in water for an hour if you leave it. But it is very very very soft, like cotton wool.
And trust me, that also comes with it's own challenges.

Me that wanted to relax my hair and do pixie cut.😭

    3. I have said what I said, if you want your uterus to be free of any growth whether benign or malignant, stay away from relaxer. If you no want keep using it, na you go still suffer am

    4. Putting your hair inside the water to float is not the best way to get your porosity.
One of the best ways to know your porosity aside from using the scientific method is to SHAMPOO WITH A CLARIFIER and THEN ALLOW IT TO AIR DRYER.

      • If It Dries Within 30min-1 Hour, It's High Porosity.
      • If It Dries Between 2-4 Hours, It's Medium-normal Porosity.

      • If It Dries Between 7-24 Hours, It's Low Porosity.

However, porosity isn't the only thing that determines the health of your hair.

For very coarse/high density, living in a highly hot and humid environment, for instance, you must use hydrating ingredients and ingredients with a stronghold to lock in your style.

You should also know your moisture cycle so that your hair won't dry out completely before you moisturise again and the best time to moisturise is on your wash day when you shampoo, condition and style.

  7. Haven't relax my hair for more than 6 years, but even though something must kill a man, even if they don't apply relaxer, there are other things that we don't even know that causes sickness, just live your life jare

    1. There could be other causes of fibroid; sugar, processed carbohydrates, soy products etc. But hair straighteners are the leading cause.

      Delete
    2. No connection whatsoever.

    3. It doesn't mean everyone using straighteners will have it and it doesn't mean as long as you are not using straighteners you'll not have it. (That is if it causes fibroid cos the article is only talking about uterine cancer)
