The Nigeria Oscars selection committee has disqualified Kunle Afolayan’s newly released movie, ‘Anikulapo’ from the nomination list of the Academy Awards, better known as the Oscars.
While announcing the development on social media, the Nigerian actor and producer also expressed his disappointment.
Kunle Afolayan said,
Despite the global reception that Anikulapo has received since its release, the Academy Awards does not deem it worthy to make its nomination list.
Last month, Nigeria’s Oscar Selection Committee announced they had received three Yoruba-language submissions: Aníkúlápó, Elesin Oba, The King’s Horseman and King of Thieves but ruled that the movies would not enter the competition as a majority of members voted that all three films were “non-eligible.
Hmmm
ReplyDeleteKunle Afolayan you should understand the game, gimmicks and politics that play in your industry...You have done a great job..Do you need an award to validate your work? No certainly...I get that we all want a pat on our backs...But hey going cry baby on this is not bam at all....Great movie...I give you an award for set design/props, costume and make up...You deserve an A1....
DeleteI thought he said he doesn't care about reviews?? Anyways, it's not the whole world, it's the yoruba community only especially those in diaspora. The rest of us do not care, its Black Panther2 we understand
DeleteBeef? 🤷🏽♀️
ReplyDeleteDon’t think so. Storyline was so mediocre.
DeletePlus isn’t that bird of death suppose to be some spiritual ish? I was surprised when bimbo was able to knack a purported spirit bird of death apkako! Heh?? A whole angel of death na him she knack 2by2?😧😧
The movie is just there jare. nothing really special… not even bimbo’s breast.
Numero it’s a great movie pls
DeleteWell, 15:02 your standard for good movies might not be as high as that of BBM. Because the storyline to me is also basic. The common kinda Very basic African kinda storyline. Nothing spectacular to get it nominated.
DeleteI concur wuth Numero's comment
Deletehe thinks its great but they have a list of criteria which it didn't meet ..doesnt make it a bad production but just didnt meet the criteria but I know he will make a lot of money from it so keep moving and improving Oscar is not the only measure ...we always say we dont need validation from America but ultimately low always seek fro it
ReplyDeleteDude is always complaining
DeleteThanks Anonymous...Why this obsessive need of validation from Oscars, Grammys e.t.c
DeleteIt is a masterpiece
ReplyDeleteThe projection of Epic tradition and culture is top notch. It gives room for debate with the open ending. Don't think you need their validation though.
Wahala dey wear abada
DeleteThe film is not Oscar worthy sorry to say. He has done better films in the past.the film kept dragging out. I was on perpetual fast forward mode throughout and I didn’t miss anything of note. Yes it better than most trash around but not Oscar worthy
ReplyDeleteLike!! I fast forwarded to where Bimbo showed brezz and ended it there
Delete😀 shooter
DeleteI thought as much, they should include it so that it will go and embarrass us there
DeleteI was really disappointed see that breast and bum bum part.
DeleteYou were disappointed to see someone do their job without boundaries?you lot amaze me
DeleteAll his movies that I've seen drag and have disjointed scenes. There is always that feeling of a poorly written story. I got notification from Netflix that this movie had been added but I didn't bother. I have no intention of wasting my time watching it with the hope that this one may be better. Same way Mo's movies are all glossy and shiny with superstar actors and weak stories, except for Oloture.
DeleteHis last really good movie was The Figurine.... he's been living on past glory. Be that as it may, he is still one of the better movie directors in Nigeria. Shows how substandard Nigeria's film industry is.
DeleteOloture yes a good movie because it tells us about the present happenings. Anikulapo shouldn't have had nudity in it. In the olden days they preserved themselves till marriage only.. morality rate was not as high as now. It doesn't depict the tradition
Delete14:46, that somebody desires boundaries amazes u? U shd be amazing urself.
DeleteMaybe it didn't meet their criteria. Is his movie the first to be rejected? Abi they must include it because it's an Afolayan movie? Please
ReplyDeleteThank you oooo
DeleteNone of his movies that I've seen are award worthy. He needs to hire better writers.
DeleteIs it the only movie that has been rejected? Crybaby..
ReplyDeleteNigerians are so entitled it stinks. Eddie Murphy has NOT won an Oscar despite his skills as a global world class movie maker. Will Smith just won his first Oscar at the @ “the slapping” edition. We assume the world will lower its standards for us. No, the world will not lower its standards to give “participation trophy” to your movie. I watched it and kept fast forwarding it. Alter Ego and “Ije -The journey” by Omotola & Genevieve on Netflix shot on 2 continents is even more Oscar worth than this hyped movie. Tunde Kelani’s movies and even Afolayan’s October 1 were much better. We just hype regular stuff. You need to read the comments below Asaba movies on YouTube, many telling mediocre actors they are the best thing since sliced bread! This emperor is half clothed so bank your Netflix money like Mo Abudu and move on after all Mo took money, produced mediocre movies causing Netflix to relocate its African headquarters to South Africa and is acting like she got a job at Harvard with the money!
Deleteanon 16.15 you say ??
DeleteDon't relent,keep pushing
ReplyDeleteBrother Kunle, as you can see it's not only your movie that was ruled out. The movies definitely didn't meet the criteria. So as you've said keep doing your thing
ReplyDeleteWhat criteria ?
DeleteWhere can I download it pls?
ReplyDeleteHe should keep pushing and improving his craft, we appreciate his works.
Netnaija movies
DeleteLet me go watch the movie fess.
ReplyDeleteBetter luck next time
ReplyDeleteI’m halfway through, thanks to my madam and honestly, I have no complaints at all. Maybe they should have stated why it was rejected
ReplyDeleteThe movies truly isn’t Oscar worthy! The VFx wasn’t top notch, mediocre storyline and dialogue. He should try again
ReplyDeleteYou can often try again, try again.
ReplyDeleteCould care less about this jerk after his Igbophobic comments. If you are good enough, validation will come effortlessly.
ReplyDeleteHis movie is not the first to be rejected
ReplyDeleteKeep pushing Kunle.Just find out why it was rejected and do better next time.We appreciate your work
ReplyDeleteBest of luck next time
ReplyDeleteOne day we will get there.
ReplyDeleteThis guy is always seeking for validation.
ReplyDeleteAlways.
And then tries to pretend (and fails woefully) that he doesn't care.
Always.
Your movie was not the only one rejected.
Other countries submitted movies and they were rejected.
Does that mean the movies were rubbish?
Maybe, maybe not.
Whatever the case take the constructive criticism given and do better.
Be better.
Gosh!!!!!!!
If oyibo no praise you and so????
You go die, you no go ever belleful until they pat you on your head?
As for this movie, I will not be watching.
Anything Nigerians hype to almost fever pitch is usually several cuts below mediocre.
Nigeria and their sentiments. The story line is nothing to write home about. The ending , i was lost. Kunle has done better movies. But i won't fail to comment on the display of the yoruba culture. Its not a movie i would want to watch twice. He should listen to the critics, so he can do better next time. Make we talk true the movie is just there .
ReplyDeleteEntitlement mentality, I'm still mad about my MB I use to download it
ReplyDeleteLMAOOOO. Nothing will make me download, even if na free.🤣🤣🤣
DeleteActually scratch that, nothing will make me watch.
I need to go watch this Anikulapo everyone is talking about.
ReplyDeleteDon't say you we're not warned
DeleteWhy do people find it hard to accept criticism? We will say well done for trying to entertain us thank you. But that is no where what will be categorized as a movie you can do better with your story line and plot.
