Then the disciple Jesus loved said to Peter, "It's the Lord!" When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he...jumped into the water, and headed to shore. The others stayed with the boat' (John 21:4-8 NLT).
Peter had to decide whether to leave his fish and go to Jesus or stay behind and enjoy what he had worked hard for. It's a test we all face when we've accomplished our life's objectives, when our nets are full and we have finally 'made it'. Your challenge is, 'Do I stay and guard my blessings or go overboard for the Lord and commit myself fully to him?' Paul refers briefly to his career's success: 'I am a pure-blooded citizen of Israel and a member of the tribe of Benjamin - a real Hebrew...I obeyed the law without fault' (Philippians 3:4-6 NLT). But listen to him now: 'Now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done...counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ' (Philippians 4:7-8 NLT).
Paul realised his true identity wasn't in his accomplishments but in his relationship with Jesus. That night Peter may have felt he was forfeiting everything, yet when he reached the shore, he found Jesus busy - cooking fish! Whatever you need, God has it. Whatever you give up, he'll repay many times over.

ReplyDeleteYo dante, yesterday you talked about how you were flogged at church for watching TV. Omo I just dey laugh as i dey read your comment because it reminded me of my own experience at Watchman Charismatic (Deperlife sister church). Very similar only say my own, na my over smartness coba me because watchman is quite a lil flexible with their own doctrines and allows television unlike deeper life back then.
DeleteWe went for their Easter retreats and that period Nigeria dey play Cameroon for nations cup knock out stages. As the naturally talented football enthusiast wey i be now, i say lie lie, i no go miss that semi final o, na so i japa. I sneak out of children’s department go watch ball for beer parlor with two of my partners in crime.
Unfortunately Nigeria lost to Cameroon in penalty shootout as Victor Ikpeba go play ball hit cross bar. After game end na that time me and my fellow little comrades eye clear say day don dark, time don go and we suppose follow for the children presentation for inside adult auditorium as lead characters. Main event for us kids o. Something we used two weeks preparing and rehearsing for is what we went MIA on. Mogbe!! 😂
Na so we begin run with our tiny legs dey go back church but as we reach gate like this, na so we jam our children teachers outside they wait for us!
They then gathered the 3 of us legends and asked who amongst the 3 of us can narrate what happened in the match. I raised my hand so i was singled out as the master-minder.

DeleteI wish my mother was alive to hear Pastor Kumuyi's new preaching. She was a devout Deeper Life Christian.
ReplyDeleteWhen she joined the church she gave out all her fine clothes to my aunties and their friends. And started starting wearing scarf and turban.
She and my father dashed their TV out also. We only listened to radio when Pastor Kumuyi was preaching.
Because radio and tv were worldly things.
What breaks my heart really is that I remember the way my mother felt when she couldn't keep up with Kumuyi's standard of Christian Life.
She felt sometimes that she had failed God and had drifted far from redemption - for things as little as misplacing her choir notebook and normal things like getting angry at someone who lived with us but was acting like the owner of the house.
When a neighbour quarreled with us for reasons I cannot remember, my mother will go with her Bible and preach to them.
At some point we relocated and left Deeper Life.
But her model of Christianity was Pastor Kumuyi's - anything short of that was backsliding.
She for example didn't think RCCG was Christian enough but she enjoyed their moving song ministrations.
I wonder what she would say to Pastor Kumuyi's message that covering ones hair all the time does not make one presentable - when we are supposed to look good for God only!🤣
Thank God for saving me.
Sometimes, I have a nostalgic feeling of going back to Deeper - but no more.
I learnt that the closest definition of God is love. If you know God as love, then you are close to it. Know God personally.
And the Bible is a book of wisdom, follow as much of it as make sense to you - to the extent that it agrees with your spirit.
The law is of men, God is love.
Your post just describe what we passed with my elder brother and the family but they are still with the church but a lot things have changed like having television in the house. 'know God personally' got me. I agree with you.

DeleteThat noodles,my son too doesn't like it unless you do proper garnishing like add roasted fish,ponmo,scent leaf even iru(locust beans) etc and it must be hot hot.so it's a no no for school because it won't be really hot again but plantain,he can eat it with anything and anyhow.
