INSIDE THE MIND OF A WOMAN GOING THROUGH MOTHERHOOD




I remember my antenatal classes like it was yesterday. I learnt so much in the classes I attended and the nurses and mid wife made it as interesting and interactive as possible.

We were taught post natal care too. One of the things I learnt was the importance of supplements. The daily use of Folic acid, Vitamin Bs , Ferrous etc cannot be over emphasised, it helps to prevent spinal bifida in babies.

We were taught on eating balanced meals and not just eating large quantities in the name of eating for two.

Also we were advised not to use hot water but warm water when having our sit bath, sitting on hot water would worsen any episiotomy site.

We were encouraged not to run from C-section when recommended by the doctors. They are recommended only when necessary.

Baby oils and powder were to be avoided because it had been noticed to cause skin irritation in babies. We were advised to source from other countries if one insist on using it. Organic products such as coconut oil, almond oil etc, were recommended to be the best

Herbs and water was not to be given to babies at all till they were six months old.

Exclusive breastfeeding when possible was referred to as the best feeding method for a baby and the use of feeding bottles were not encouraged at all.

The use of warm water and not hot water for new born etc. We were encouraged to take classes with the grandmas so they would stop a lot of old practices that has now been considered dangerous such as throwing the babies up and massaging babies vigorously and indiscriminate use of drugs and herbs for babies.

We were taught funny songs too.
