Singer Joeboy Recounts How He Was Embarrassed In School For Not Being Able To Pay His Fees

Nigerian singer, Joeboy, had an interview with show host Chude Jideonwo and he addressed the issue of school fees and how he was embarrassed and known as the boy who could not pay his fees.....

Joeboy said; “Some Challenges on the way, maybe you fail some exams, maybe you owe school fees. Like there was one part where it was school fees, yea. That thing was so embarrassing, I need to say this on camera to schools. I don’t know whether they still do it but if a child owes school fees, don’t call the child out and say you’re owing school fees, just tell the child not to come to school.

There’s one other thing they used to do, they used to flog the child for not paying school fees. The child doesn’t have money now, so I need to put that on camera for anybody that owns a school who is watching this, do not embarrass the child because he is owing school fees.

So it was really embarrassing for me at that point because I think it affected my esteem too at that point because, I remember one incident, I was in JS3 because they used to come to this class to name people that owe school fees.

So before they even said anything, people were like Aminfewa Joseph, so I still remember till today and I still get those guys for mind, yeah. And they’ve tried to reach out to me, I just ignore them like why are you talking to me? They might not have meant it but e pain me.”

  1. That calling out a child out for not paying school fees is so annoying. And even flogging the child. Why do they do that?

Meanwhile, forgive your old school mates. So many things we did as kids that we all regret. Good thing is, you emerged better from that experience.

  8. I totally condemn the part where a child is embarrassed or flogged for owing because pray tell, how does a child owe? The parents who registered or enrolled the child should be held accountable. I reserve the bigger blame for the parents who asked a child to go and face that alone. Must your child go to a school you can't afford? God forbid you fall on bad times, withdraw the child to a cheaper one or a government school. When you find your feet again, take them back to the big one if you wish. God will judge parents who set up their kids for such humiliation before punishing the school owners. The other kids were just being kids.

Also, stop begging for your children's (school) fees from family and friends. By the time a child is done with schooling, there are zillions of people waiting to emotionally blackmail him or her because of their contribution to their schooling. Parents, cut your coats accordingly. Some will be asking for 300k school fees loan from someone whose child's fees isn't up to 150k. If you explain that you don't have, you automatically become their enemies no matter how many times you've assisted them in the past. That's not fair.

  9. I can relate to this and I understand him well. Why beat a child that isn't responsible for the payment? Sheer wickedness. I remember one time I and my brother complained to my dad about our school fees. I even showed him one injury on my hand that I was beaten because we are owning them. Our dad said he will follow us to school the next day that the teacher should beat him instead of us and anytime they feel like beating us he should be called upon instead because we aren't the one owing them but him. That shit needs to be addressed walahi
