Interestingly, every citizen (including the writer) is/has a panacea for the gamut of woes bedeviling the country currently. However, in spite of 'our' 'Solomonic' wisdom, knowledge and understanding, the problems remain!
I have asked myself some honest questions and I have attempted to answer them truthfully too. We (the People of the Federal Republic of Nigeria) want to see a good structure (with good finishing) sitting on a 'faulty/shaky foundation'.
How did/do our office holders emerge in this country? Have you ever asked yourself this question? Let me assist you, just in case you have just moved back from 'overseas'. At the Wards, Local Council Areas and States levels, we have the almighty 'Delegates' who play the role of an 'electoral college'.
The holders of the various legislative and executive offices as we have them today or as we may have them forever (unless something drastic is done by the People of the FRN) are as strong, sound, sane and credible as the 'Delegates' who 'select' or 'elect' them. Unfortunately, the corruption starts from that level in my country.
The political jobbers and 'godfathers' appreciate this little secret.
What is their strategy? Very easy. Pocket the leaders/members of that class and blind them with a paltry sum or a huge sum, depending on the Region of the country in question.
Some of us see what happens at our various Stadia during Primaries. That of Abuja is still fresh in my memory.
Dollar was just flying around 'upandan' some years back. How can and would credible candidates/aspirants emerge with the present crop of delegates the nation has been 'cursed' with?
We, the citizens curse office holders on a daily basis, what about the chief problem of our democracy, the Delegates? When I hear cliches like 'Our Mumu Don Do', I laugh, because 'na now our mumu just dey enter Gear 2', we have not even started.
Focus on the 'Delegates'! Ask them questions. Hold them accountable. Without them, these mediocre persons cannot and would not emerge!
Stop theorizing! Get involved!

Wow! So Apt! Noted for future reference.
ReplyDeleteSimply put, the delegates determines who the "rulers" are and not the masses.
DeleteWho the delegate "anoint" emerges the winner. Interesting
Politricks in my country today .
ReplyDeleteLike say na juju they do us.
ReplyDeleteThis is the fact. These so called delegates are so corrupt that they continue to drag us into the abyss with their greed. They dont care if you are credible or can do the job, all they care about is their pocket. After the election, they will continue to suffer for their bad choices.
