ReplyDeletePlease why are Nigerians so fixated on titles? I see comments like "he's not even a doctor, blah, blah, blah... A chiropractor is a professional. In some countries, chiropractors have special tax treatment for Work-in-Progress(WIP) like lawyers, dentists, accountants, medical doctors, and veterinarians. Even if he is not a professional, he has a job!!! We should take pride in honest living.

DeleteNo, I think this is just a case of different climates and nomenclature. In Nigeria, a physician is addressed as Dr. and referred to as a doctor. So when Nigerians hear someone say he is a doctor, the assumption is that you are a physician (ie medical doctor). In the states, though everyone with a doctorate may be addressed as Dr., they are not usually referred to as doctors. People would rather say, he is an audiologist, she is a chiropractor, I am an optometrist, or a physician. They get specific when referring to their doctoral careers, cos just saying someone is a doctor doesn't convey much... It's a broad term. So calm down, when Nigerians say he is not a doctor, what I think they are actually saying, is that he is not a physician.
