Unprosecuted Cases Of Boarding House Deaths In Nigeria..

The case of Dowen student Sylvester Oromoni who died after he was tortured by some students in school is not the first case of students being tortured to death in schools in Nigeria but all the other cases have been swept under the carpet...

-  Sylvester Oromoni (Jnr), a Junior Secondary School two pupil at Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos, would have clocked at 12 today. But he was allegedly physically abused in the school. He died yesterday 3 December 2021, from complications of the abuse.

- 14-year old Karen-Happuch Aondodoo Akpagher, a student of Premier Academy, Lugbe, Abuja, was allegedly raped in her school. She died from complications resulting from the rape a few days later on 22 June 2021.

- Nuhu Yahaya — 13-year-old Junior Secondary School II student of the Federal Government College Kwali, Abuja was allegedly beaten to death by his teacher over failure to do his assignment. He died on Monday 9 August, 2021.

  4. Because we have a culture of bullying and it has become an accepted culture....Culture of silence is what is not helping us..It did not happen to me so he no concern me...We have trained our kids in gangsterism and cultism..Blatantly displayed on TV, music, movies, school and in our everyday life...So many things are wrong..We exalt money so much and would rather dehumanize people or not care about human life which is of most sacred....

Once a big man or popular family is involved in heinous crimes, it will be swept under the carpet or use rofo rofo or wuru-wuru to dodge it....Until we respect and build institutions, this individualistic, big manism, do-you-know-who-I-am syndrome stops then more stories will come...

I don tire to complain jare...We nigerians need to do better...

    2. You have hit the nail! Nigerians are very complicit. Imagine that school the Karen girl was raped. Do you know that school still ran admissions? Parents are still enrolling their kids there. As long as 'no be my own'. Instead of them to join hands and avoid that school because it tried and is still trying to ensure that Karen's death is swept under the rug! This is how I know Dowen school will still stand. I am sure some parents are mad that their kids are out of school due to the closure. That's how dense and totally complicit most Nigerians are. A former bank Ceo owns that school Karen was raped in. So you can imagine the long road ahead.

  13. Do we have government in this country at all?
My heart bleeds seeing how these beautiful kids' lives were cut short in the same place where they are supposed to be educated and protected. The worst of it is the habit of sweeping the cases under the carpet. I pray Sly and every other children will get justice.

  21. These are but a few, a guest at Arise TV morning show counted up to 5 cases of death of students resulting from negligence on the part of the school. Dowen has no PTA, so many boarding schools have no child safety measures in place, govt and parents are complicit in this problem because there is no monitoring/regulation on the part of govt and parents on their part don't ask the necessary questions or demand to see safety facilities as touted by these schools.

  24. That is why I can never send my child to boarding school. It is lazy parenting! A lot of people are still dealing with the traumatic effects of boarding school. When you complain of bullying or mistreatment, it's "we all went through it" "it's going to teach you discipline." Because you had toxic experiences, your child should go through toxic experiences too? Can't you discipline your child your damn self? What is the difference between people who went to boarding school and people who went to day school? Are they not all flourishing?
I can never put my child through the nonsense I went through in the name of boarding school. It shattered my confidence and till today, I'm trying to work on my psychological issues.

  26. Ah ah! Beaten to death just because of an assignment? Just getting to know about this now. This Country is really turning to something else. Tired of reading bad news everyday. God rest all their souls. And may Justice be served. Happy to know that Sylvester's family hired Femi Falana to take up their case against Dowen College. I pray it works in their favour at the end of it all.

  28. I can't imagine anything more heart breaking, I don't even want to imagine. Life sef, who can know the future? You get married, give birth, rejoice, your child is brilliant or talented, making A's and you're full of dreams for their future. Just to get a phone call that they are gone, for something so preventable and justice is not given. Now I understand that prophet that told Mary "a sword shall pierce your heart" - cos this child was born to die. Their life hasn't even begun yet..

Day schools too can be horrible. Risk of accidents, abuse, cultism, bullying and all are still present.

  29. Things like this make me respect Don-Davis’ mom. The woman really fought for her son. Imagine losing your child to being raped or beaten by a teacher and you don’t say anything. They’re all enablers of this rubbish. If half of the parents would come out and fight like the mother of don Davis I’m sure all this rubbish would reduce.
