Lagos Govt Orders Indefinite Closure Of Dowen College After 12-Year-Old Was Allegedly Tortured To Death For Refusing To Join Cult

The Lagos State Government has ordered the indefinite closure of Dowen College, Lekki, following the death of 12-year-old Sylvester Oromoni (Jnr), who was allegedly beaten by colleagues for refusing to join a cult.

The closure, the state government said, is pending the outcome of an investigation into Sylvester's death.

Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folasade Adefisayo announced the closure after a meeting with the management and staff of the school on Friday.

Following the death of 12-year-old Sylvester, the management of the school had earlier ordered that academic activities be put on hold for two days — Friday 3rd and Monday 6th of December.

This was disclosed in an email the school management sent to parents on Friday morning.

Though the school did not make a direct reference to Sylvester's death, it said the stay-at-home was necessitated by the current happenings and the emotional disposition of its pupils.

The school also said it would allow the pupils to revise for their forthcoming examinations

The email reads, “Dear Parents,

“In view of the current situation concerning the school and considering the emotions of our students, we have advised that our students stay home tomorrow Friday 3rd and Monday 6th.

“This will also afford the students opportunity to revise for their forthcoming examinations starting next week.

“Thank you for your understanding.”

On Wednesday, a social media user, @perrisoromoni, who is also a relation to the deceased, lamented the death of his cousin who was allegedly beaten to death at Dowen College, Lagos.

The young man who took to his Twitter handle alleged that the deceased was beaten to death after he refused to succumb to pressure by fellow pupils to join a cult.

According to him, the deceased mentioned the names of five persons responsible for the pain before he finally gave up the ghost on Tuesday.

On Friday, Sylvester Oromoni, father of the deceased 12-year-old pupil said the pupils who bullied his child, were once suspended temporarily by the school after they asked the boy to describe his sister's private parts.

Dowen college must be a useless school. They are interested in protecting their finished image instead of ensuring the poor boy gets justice??

Imagine telling the boy's guardian that he got injured while playing football!!

And those little monsters have been allowed to go home. Their useless parents are shielding them so they can become a menace in the society. It takes a useless parent to cover up this level of atrocity. Your child beat someone to death, may woe betide you for covering up his crime.

Useless people everywhere. Person go send pikin go school na death go end am? God forbid!!

May the little boy's soul rest in peace.

  29. Boarding house schools have there own horror stories. When I was still in Nigeria my son was attending FGC kwali. I made sure I was visiting him on every visiting day. I didn't miss it for one day. I went to school one day and there was chaos everywhere parents shouting and crying. I asked my son what happened he told me how a senior student used belt to flog a junior student after stripping the junior student naked in the process the head of the belt hit the junior student penis and nearly cut it off. The junior student was rushed to the nearest hospital and the senior student was suspended so the parents were trying to bring him back into the School that was why parents and students were shouting and protesting. I was shocked! Thank God the boy survived but he never came back to that school. I made sure I paid a senior student money to look out for my son during those days in that school.Teachers and Guardians don't sleep in the hostel with them To lose a child is painful ๐Ÿ’”. When we lost my elder sister my mother was in a trance for 1 month. My mother died within 5 months my sister died. It was really a trying period for our family! God in heaven knows what happened to that young child may his killers not go scot free in Jesus Name Amen! If they like let the fly abroad the will reap their punishment in due course. RIP Angel๐Ÿ˜‡

    1. @nkiru.iwuchuku wow, you paid for the safety of your child at the school, what about those children whose parents can't pay. The best is to speak up against injustice not going behind to corrupt someone so that your child is protected. I am sure since you paid that senior student, he became 10 times hardcore to others who could not pay. I think it is shameful on your part to do such a thing. You will argue that you wanted to have your child's safety assured but at whose expense, the other children's? Wow, that is why there are rules in schools for bullying and the like. Do you know that you created a money hungry monster in that senior student, 20 years later he might come and rob you or do something worse. Always stand for the truth, you should have joined the other parents in protesting and bringing safety to all children not only your child. Preferential treatment is not always good. Your account has really upset me, I am a parent but I could never do what you did. And what values are teaching your own child? It is ok to buy your way in life because you have money ๐Ÿ˜ก๐Ÿ˜ก๐Ÿ˜ก

Cause i can bet anything that the school knows this boy have been bullied from day one and did nothing.
I'm sure those bullies must be well known in school as tyrants. Every school has one of those. Every school. But their parents probably got more bars.
Evil children like that would grow up and venture into politics in future. Oh yes, that's always their future plan by their parents of course. Politics.

That is why the school should not have shielded the perpetrators of the crime, by offering online classes shows to us that for them it all about the bottom line, the dollar, the naira. It is just about the money. Why are they shielding the little criminals, have they been paid or something? If they had just said from the onset, bullying took place, but we put in place such and such measures to deter would be bullies from committing further acts and the young people who are suspected to have committed the act, we have handed them over to the authorities. They could have received good will from the public and the parents of that school could have also been assured that their kids are safe in that school.

  41. I have always said this and will always say this the children are only a reflection of the culture. Cult groups are a problem all over the country and obviously at every level. So the school has been closed down, so what? will that stop other cults from forming and terrorizing ppl? The cultural mindset is what needs to shut down. If nothing changes in the minds of the population then incidents like these will continue to happen, the rituals will continue to happen, the body parts industry will continue to thrive. No culture is perfect, not one and ppl should start standing up and demanding a change and letting it be known that all forms of fetishisms at any level in any place in the nation is unacceptable.

  46. I don't understand
Your son has told you he is being bullied. To the extent that he is even saying "they might kill him."
At the very least, remove him from the boarding house. It's only Lekki. The best thing is to remove him from that useless school in general. But if you can't, at least remove him from the boarding house. It is not enough to change his hostel!
Why oh why would you keep your child in an environment where he or she has told you so many times that he or she is threatened? Unsafe?
You see, millennial and baby boomer parents do not take bullying and hazing seriously. If you tell them you are being bullied, they tell you "it'll make you strong" "it'll make you a man" "we all went through it and survived." Have you seen it now?
This is the reason why I can NEVER take my child to boarding school!!! Lie lie! Old School African parents overhype boarding school too much! Children who went to day school grow up just fine. Subjecting your child to all manner of nonsense in the name of "it will make you stronger" "it will build your character." BUILD YOUR CHARACTER MY ASS!
I am so angry right now. This death was so needless and could have been prevented.

Wish they had taken action and just removed d boy from the school. I hated my first ever secondary sch cos it was a federal school,i wasnt even bullied at all, seniors liked me sef,but the suffering wasnt for me,was always getting sick. My parents removed me immediately to a private school in Lagos.
Pls parents listen to ur kids. If ur child is being bullied, looking unwell, being withdrawn and unhappy abeg just change his school.
Im sure Sly's parents just thot it will build him to be strong and he will get over that stage.
Also be watchful of sexual molestation too. Alot of homosexuality starts from seniors abusing juniors, till they get in too deep themselves and it becomes late. All those boys only school especially are real culprits of homosexuality.
