In a judgement delivered by Justice Okon Abang , the court held that the prosecutor, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) produced essential evidence through witnesses to prove beyond reasonable doubt that Maina is guilty of money laundering in the sum of N171,099,000.
The court held that Maina stole over N2 billion belonging to pensioners, “most of whom have died without reaping the fruits of their labour”.
“I find the defendant (Mr Maina) guilty and convicted on counts 2, 6, 9, 3, 7 and 10″, Abang held.
Justice Abang also found Maina guilty of concealing his true identity as a signatory to accounts opened in two banks using the identity of his family members without their knowledge.
These accounts had cash deposits of N300 Million, N500 Million, and N1.5billion
The court held that Maina stole monies meant for pensioners as he could not prove where he got them from.
The court also found Maina guilty for the purchase of a property in Abuja which was paid in cash the sum of $1.4million, which is above the statutory threshold of N5million and without passing through a financial institution, describing it as a criminal offense.

ReplyDeleteGood but..
Only 8 years?
The deaths he caused should be put into consideration oh.
He should forfeit all his properties and monies too.
He deserves to be locked up for life
DeleteWith hard labour, I hope. Wicked looters.
DeleteJust mere 8years for stealing that much!!!
Delete8yrs vacation you mean because they come out looking fresh and we'll taken care of ๐
Delete8 years is too small, 15-20 is more like it.
ReplyDeleteBut I hope he doesn't disappear from that prison the very next day he's put there.
6years in reality is 3years. I can go to prison for 3years and keep N2.1b in my account. This man did not supposed to serve his jail terms concurrently, he supposed to serve his jail terms for 61years to serve as a warning to other looters. Imagine 8yrs and 2yrs already gone. Rubbish๐คฎ
DeleteHonestly, just 8 years??
DeleteSelfish and wicked lots! Awon ole buruku!
ReplyDeleteIt is well
ReplyDeleteWere the funds recovered? Jailing these thieves without recovering the funds amount to nothing. Some steal, get jailed, live semi normal lives in prison, come out to enjoy the loot. 2 billion naira is a lot of money. What of the dead pensioners? No one talked about them and he got only 8 years to be released after few years on health grounds? Okay.
ReplyDeleteBaby steps
