ReplyDeleteThe story of Joanna teaches Commitment, Service to God and Stewardship.
Luke chapter 8 talked about certain women who were healed of evil spirits and infirmities with Joanna amongst them. That singular act of healing made her become a Christ follower; supporting his ministry and following him village to village to share the gospel (Luke 8:1).
Joanna wasn't mentioned much but at least, I got an insight to her background. She was married to Chuza who worked for Herod Antipas so she was privileged. Whatever sickness she had must have defiled treatment for her to go to Jesus despite knowing how Herod's household despised him (Herod Antipas's father ordered the killing of the male children when Jesus was born). I don't know how she did it but finding time to follow Jesus through different cities and villages without fear, assisting with her position and status as an upper-class to navigate difficult situations and possibly saving them from danger as they travel about is really an incredible feat.
She was there right from the beginning of Jesus ministry (Luke 8:3) till the very end and even when He rose (Luke 24:1-12). These were the only 2 times Joanna was mentioned in the bible yet she made such big impact in the gospel of our Lord Jesus, she was instrumental in his mission.
Her commitment to Jesus is one to emulate cos she was the only one out of the other women mentioned coming from Jesus' adversary household where execution could have been the order of the day. I mean, John the Baptist was beheaded as a dance prize. Surely the rest of the followers of Christ must have been worried about her putting them at risk but her resolve was never shaken and was never compromised. She served and cared for Jesus till the end as she was among the women that prepared spices and ointments as He was being laid in the tomb (Luke 23:55). She was also there on the fateful Easter Monday when He was no longer in the tomb and the angels told them that "He is risen" (Luke 24:10). Such a wonderful privilege she had. 💛

It's high time Bride price is paid directly to the parents of the bride. When it's time for a lady to be given in marriage, the entire clan who in most cases don't even know the bride, but because it's a 'right' for them to partake in the bride price sharing, they make the loudest noise and most times frustrate the process. The parents nurtured and cared for the child from start to finish and should be given all that is required for their daughter's hand in marriage. If they choose, they can share with whomever they want. If you look closely, some if not most of the people that are expected to partake in the rite do don't care about the family of the bride, do not even know if they exist, when there is a serious family dispute, they all turn deaf hears and will not rally round in support of the family. There is no real relationship among the members of the clan, in some cases, some of them actually even have a hand in the death of the bride's father but when it's time for bride price rite, they come out of hiding and become full fledged members of the family. The very parents who knew all about their child may even be willing to let go of some things, but they will insist and claim to know about the tradition and how it must be done. You hear them chanting 'our daughter'. she only became your daughter because you have come to benefit from her marriage rite.
